hello. new guy here, i have been wanting to do a pirate costume for awhile, finally got around to it. i am basing my look on the first mates from the POTC but being careful about buying things to make it as historically accurate as possible. a lot of the things in those movie are not accurate. so stylized accurate??? i mainly go to sci-fi conventions. and love doing historically costumes to give the trekkies a hard time. but i am member of the 501st legion a starwars costume group. even at these cons, most pirates you see are captains so that is why i am making a first mate. got my slops and my buckle shoes.......and everything else but still waiting on a few items t…

Allow me to set the stage by saying, I've been working my way through the Aubrey/Maturin series again. This morning I was grading papers from my students regarding a project they'd done last week. A part of the project called for measuring the length of a ~6meter, somewhat flexible, PVC pipe with a long cloth tape measure. As scientists in training they were instructed to come up with an estimate of the error in their measurement and propagate that error through to future calculations. One particular group had decided that 0.0001meters was a reasonable error. To which I replied "Far too small! A tenth of a milimeter, forsooth!" I suspect they already think me insane. …

My wife and I have been planning this year to get a tent. Naturally it should be period correct and large enough for us to sleep in should the need arise. The primary purpose will be for setting up at events to showcase the guns I have built and have for sale. I would like something large enough to use as a vendors tent yet still be small enough to not be a headache to transport/setup. Ive been thinking about a double belled wedge with an awning. I can set tables out front in the awning yet keep our other stuff and valuables in the tent. My other thought is a wall tent roughly 10x12 Any opinions?

Hi.... If I seem a little timid it's because I'm just a bit intimidated... << is that useing an alternate form of a word to describe itself? nvm You guys are like, serious pirate people and I'm just kind of a silly fangirl. I'm almost afraid to admit that I'm drawn here because of I love the PoTC movies. I've done a little research and I guess I'm totally a fantasy pirate type. I'm sure that in a few years or so I'll be at pirate events wearing whatever I can put together that looks vaugely piratey and engineering my own wardrobe malfunctions. But I'm interested in hisorical pirates too although it was my Dad that told me even if I love fantasy pirates I shoul…

So aye, as you've guessed I am indeed new here. However, I was not able to get "an anonymous name" so I had to sign up via Facebook. So ignore my un-piratey demeanor....But I digress. Ahoy!

Let me take a moment to introduce myself, Captain Syn. it has always been a boyhood dream to be a pyrate to sail the caribbean live on the ocean island hopping. I think what set it in motion was the ride, "Pirates of the Caribbean", I rode on that when I was about 5 and still remember the original ride. Long before the POTC movies came out and redesigned the ride, (which I have no problem with they did a good job and still kept to the original nicely I think ) I emediately when and spent my hard earned chore money I had saved and bought a sword and hat(with my parents help that is) Fast forward almost 20 years and I'm glad I have kept my dream alive! I still love pyrates…

an introduction for the newb. i'm chesapeake, but can be shortened to chesa if you like. i'm named for a bay that's on the opposite side of the country as i am, and i've never been there. i'm nineteen years old. i hope that's not terribly young around here. in any case. i am new to "the pirate scene," but i've appreciated pirates for a long time. actually, i live in anaheim california, and one of the defining moments of my childhood was getting a fortune card for a quarter from the machine in the shop just outside the exit of pirates of the caribbean (the ride). on the one side it had a fortune, and the other had an index of jolly roger flags and the pirates who u…

Greetings to all! Allow me to introduce myself as the landlocked scholar, Pyrate Joe. For the past several years I have found myself becoming more and more taken with the subculture I've found surrounding pirates. It's such a great shinny beacon of freedom and romanticism that I cannot help but be ever moved by it! Just this last year I even had the great pleasure of attending the Portland Pirate Festival in St. Helens, Oregon. My first ever festival. I did have a question I wished to pose to all whom may have an answer. While attending the Portland Pirate fest I did happen upon a fine piece of steel which was priced modestly enough for my meager salary. Now I am no r…

(Warning: I sometimes write a lot. I apologize. If you don't like walls-o'-text, it's alright, I totally understand! Hello all the same. I'm happy to be here!) Hello all! I'm a 23-year-old amateur seamstress with a love of costuming ("normal" clothes are so boring!). I learned the basics of sewing from my mother when I was a child, and through high school taught myself everything else that I now know about garment patterning and construction. Classes? Books? Pfft, I've got the Internet! (That said, someday I may go to school for fashion design. But that's the boring part...) It was probably about six years ago that I first fell in love with historical fashion. I started…
