I have a pair of sea boots that are made by "Pleaser". They are real leather, not the greatest, but still real, and have a vinyl lining. They're pretty darn good boots, they've held up for a year and half of constant wearing so far. The only problem is this, I am about 115-120 pounds and I have SCRAWNY lil legs. These boots were made for someone with a larger calf. With no internal support system, (which I've tried to do as you shall see below), they just fall down about my ankles and look ridiculous. So how do I get them to fit? I've super-glued paint strips, yardstick pieces, and neither of them hold up very well. The superglue tears the lining off after a few wea…

I have searched the forums and nothing really came up that satisfied what I was looking for (it was difficult to think up good search terms for this as well that were specific enough). So here we go: I am in search of good, historically correct pen and/or quill, ink, and container to keep it in. In particular, I am looking for these items in a form that a sailor who could write (like Esquimelin, Dampier, or any of the other sailors who wrote journals at sea during this time) would have during the GAOP era. So far, all I have found is a source for period correct paper to write on: http://www.2makepaper.com/

I just got back from a antique/thirft store in Durham and found a wooden jewelry box with a leather top and a metal pirate ship in the middle with ornate wood carvings around the edge of the box. Eve cooler is when i opened it there was a small sliding compartment that had a 9 volt battery in it and I found two dials on the side of the box. It looks like it was an old radio an there was a small speaker in the bottom. Thing needs a lot of TLC and a new coat of stain but the owner was amazed at how taken I was with it so he gave it to me for free! I found out from one of the other workers that his oldest daughter had just passed away this week (breast cancer) so I went …

Anchor Knot Made in 1973 from "The Book of Ornamental Knots" by Hensel and Graumont. Please excuse the age and other stains (it was glued to a board). When it fell off the board many years ago it was shoved in a plastic bag which caused the twisting. I still like it. Tony

lookey lookey what i ran over leaving work. yup, got onto the interstate and saw this sitting upside down on the side of the road. So I turned myself around at the next "authorized use only" median and went back to fetch it. Well it came up so quickly that I ran it over on the recovery lap. Still in good shaped- its a townsend. Now, to leave it or modify?

For ten bucks I couldn't leave the thrift store with out it. it's one of those "Wal Mart" style trunks but I still think it has potential once I remove all the handles and the front lock. Tried to upload a pic but it was too big so I snagged this one Only difference is mine only has handles in the front and not on the sides and no wheels. It's partical board covered in a thin imitation leather like material. So if anyone has ever undergone the process of converting one of these into a more period piece please let me know

For all the creative folk, as well as any person ever tasked with a “Can you fix this” problem, I would like to introduce Aves Studio. I was first introduced to them while at an Art Gallery showing outside Joshua Tree, CA, leading me to initially purchase their Aves Power Pack sampler. I have since used their FIXIT Sculpt for concrete garden statue repair (see photos below), and Apoxy Paste, for concrete pot repair, with fantastic results. I think this group of products offers a great option for not only repair, but new sculptural creation as well, in an extremely durable, easy to work with product, and I am happy to share them with you. FIXIT is: 2 par…

I've started doing some leatherworking, mostly baldrics and belts and simple things so far. I'm trying to decide what type of buckles I should get to put on my baldrics. As I'm sure we all know, larger size buckles are a pain to come across, but I've found a couple resources. In your opinions, would you like to see a more rustic blacksmithed buckle or a shiny brass one? I'm not sure which would be more period correct as I'm sure there were people making brass buckles but also blacksmiths making this type of thing. I'm attaching a couple pictures of the options I'm looking at, any advice would be helpful!

I've been working on some Baldric Buckles (or can be used as a belt buckle too). They are still wax models and I'm going to have them cast in bronze and antiqued. They measure 5 1/8 X 3 5/8. Only problem is they can only be done in a minimum order of 12. I will have to sell the other 10 in order to pay for the casting. If enough people here are interested in buying the other ten off me , I'll go ahead and have them done as it is nearly $500 to have them cast. I have more buckle designs in the works and this will be the first of my line, if I can move them out the door. I will put my logo (gibbet and bones) on the bottom of these buckles. Does $45 + shipping sound like a f…

I stumbled onto this site tonight, and since scrimshaw is a history with travelers I thought I would share. He does amazing and beautiful work. http://www.pyrate.com/ Ironic how his site is close to this URL, eh? While I don't agree with whale hunting or harpooning, commerically, there are some aborignial people that depend on it as a right of manhood. You'll notice that he speaks about harpooning, etc, on his site, that's why I mentioned this. Beautiful pendants, and so. :) I respect this type of artistic ability. Isabella

I have this fantastic old pewter covered stein my grandfather bought over in Germany during the time between WWII and Korea. I researched the history of the stein and it's well documented from the1400-1850 and beyond, but what about using it with my camp kit? It's a salt glazed crockery with cobalt blue and a shakespearian tavern scene on it. I'll post a photo of it when I get out the camera next. How about some of you out there? Oppinions?

I'd like to share some period images I've been recently collecting, which show sailors & assorted other working joes of the GAOP. I'll continue to add to this thread as I find new ones. Let's start with some Canaletto: (b. 1697, Venezia, d. 1768, Venezia) Here is a brief bio on this artist: Zuane Antonio Canal, Venetian painter, the son of Bernardo Canal, a well-known scenery painter at the time. 'Canaletto' — or small canal — as he was soon called, received his training in the studio of his father and his brother, with whom he continued to collaborate for several years. He became the most famous view-painter of the 18th century. The images I'm posting are crops and …

I'm looking for a belly box that goes around one's neck, hangs in the front and is held in place by a belt. Like the ones that appear in so many illustrations. Bart Roberts (lower image) has one on.

This discussion is being moved to here.... I think the double lobbed smaller buckles would be fine. These are from milwarehouse.com I would go with 18BK01 which is 1-3/4 inches or 18BK06 which is 1-3/8ths. Other opinions? GoF

have pillaged many wool coats from good will.... and i am wondering and perusing old paintings ( in books) to see if i can get an idea what one would see--- but i know since we are pirates we can have a mix of rich and then humble blankets... i know from reading the calamitous 14th century, that blankets and pillows and such things were found many times in property lists and wills.. they existed.... but not always spoken in great detail unless it was a wealthy perrson.... anyone cite a few source?? anecdotes from other reading???
