Oh I agree entirely John! The reason I love doing this is because of the thrill I get when we discover something new.

I don't like things in black and white either - I never, and wouldn't ever say that no Anglo-american sailor wore a hoodie. But, in all the research that we've done there's not been any sign of Anglo-American seamen in hoodies. So if Ed wants to portray a common type he'd be better off avoiding hoodies for now, unless and until it can be shown that such a garment was common.

It's your outfit, you can wear what you like and nobody here will tell you otherwise, but if your aim is to portray "a common anglo- american sailor/ pirate", then using pictures of Venetian gondoliers for your source is the wrong way to go.

Okay, it´s totally clear! I only wanted to clarify that my way of thinking is: "The possibility exists, evidences are missing until now, let´s see, what the future brings..."

Even if I don´t go to reenactments my claim is to wear most accurate garb.

Haha... afraid not. My class was just gis stuff, not archaeology. Suffice to say, it is a known fact that archaeologists have commited fraud, and maybe even worse, have overlooked important finds because they didn't fit their model.

My best educated guess: canvas/sailcloth

It's obviously wet-weather gear and canvas would really do the trick. And although it is very simply drawn, the shape is one that indicates a sewn construction rather than knit. That's not to say there weren't knit hoodies. It's just that this Spanish sailor's hoodie would be easier to sew from stiff canvas than to knit from flexible wool yarn.
