Red Cat Jenny Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I went to http://maps.google.com/ and located the real Tortuga (see my post under (Tortuga) I chose sattelite and took meself a tour. Good thing I hid me ship, where it was safe to drop anchor! It seems the center of the island is vastly vegetated and empty. The Western side has a very large lake and swamps. The North coast is cliffs and rocks and heavy surf, but the Southern coast IS populated. There seem to be farms, houses and boats. Given the political climate of this area between Cuba and Haiti (think kidnapping, guerillas, modern day piracy) I doubt it's safe. But It was a tantalizing fascinating lil trip via this service. From Haitis dept of tourism in Wash DC Tortuga Island A 30-minute drive to the east of Port-de-Paix by a good, dirt road takes you to St Louis du Nord, a pretty coastal town from where sailing boats cross the 10-kilometer channel to Tortuga Island, the Caribbean’s biggest pirate base in the 17th century. Nearly 40 kilometers long, seven kilometers wide and 464 meters above the sea at its highest point, its smooth rounded shape reminded seafarers of the back of a turtle. (Tortuga in Spanish and La Tortue, its Haitian name, in French.) Heres a good hiding place (long as the surf isn't too bad The S Coast showing houses or buildings and boats Yarr! Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.... Her reputation was her livelihood. I'm a pirate, love. By nature and by choice! My inner voice sometimes has an accent! My wont? A delicious rip in time...
