Grappling Hooks???

Recommended Posts

Now I had a pic of a proportedly early 18th c grappling hook but I will be dag nabbed if I can find it now....

IIRC....

It was a 3 pronged affair... one long rod, pointed ends bent to form an eye in the middle (so it looks like a big upside down W with the middle part having the eye.

The third arm was then welded to the other two prongs above the "eye".

From looking at it, I would have said that each of the arms were about 10" long (if straighten).

Ok... I know, that is clear as mud...

Wow Greg if you could find and post that picture I would be grateful. I wager my first officer could make a copy of it... and then one of the guns to launch it as well... God I love my crewe!!:huh:

Oh by the way, any word on the gun itself... I've only the line drawing of the converted grenade launcher in one of the Osprey books, I believe it is?? I think I will post this in Twill as well....

Yeah... I saw that picture of the grenade launcher in the Osprey book too... and I was so fascinated that I bought the Hand Mortar kit from TRS.

You can follow the chronicles of the project here

http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/handmortar.htm

I need to update it though, as it is finally complete and I am awaiting delivery.

I can't imagine how you would "convert" the grenade launcher to fire a grappling hook. I would think that you would have to modify the grappling hook to be launched from a grenade launcher.

I am curious as to how much windage there would be on a grappling hook and how far it could be "launched".

Yeah I hear you... When you really sit back and take into consideration what it is supposed to do there are a lot of pieces to the puzzel...

My first officer, Andy, will most likely figure it out... He's already planning to make a false mast and rigging to shoot the thing at.... the guy truly is amazing...

I'm going to send him the link for the Hand mortar.... That might actually be the ticket...... he built this "candy mortar" for the end of events where there are a lot of kids... fires a ton of candy way up into the air and it scatters, then the kids can run and find it...

There's a whole section in Boarders Away Vol II about weirdo guns that fire flaming lobster cages and sh*t... I'm pretty certain a grapple hook gun is in there. If memory serves, it's something of a large bore blunderbuss. Maybe Dutch? It might have even been a swivel-mounted rail gun sized thing. Should've looked it up last night but it slipped my mind. But I think the thing I'm thinking of was more of a grapple with an incendiary attached, so this might be something completely different.
