Capn_Enigma
Errol Flynn or no Errol Flynn - would you let a doctor by the name of "Peter Blood" medicate you? "The floggings will continue until morale improves!"
William Blydes
It was Flynn's other Pirate movie "Sea Hawk" that had the dagger in the sail trick right? The trick that Will uses in the PotC2 movie. Another attempt to make an Errol Flynn connection for Bloom. William Blydes I don't get lost, I EXPLORE! Adventures on the High Seas (refitted and back on station!) Capn_Enigma
Noooot quite. This stunt was originally displayed in the technicolor silent movie "The Black Pirate" with Douglas Fairbanks in 1926. It has since been used in numerous swashbuckling movies, for example "The Goonies" (1985). It is always meant as a tribute to one of the first pirate movies and its great lead actor. Callie Moore
Errol Flynn makes such a pretty pirate... much nicer than Bloom. And - major kudos to him for it - he can actually pull off being intimidating and adorable at the same time! eeee! (teeny girly fan squeal) Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. ... Cap'n Pete Straw
I actually finally got my two youngest kids to sit down last night and watch my DVD of "Captain Blood" from beginning to end. (My daughter: "You mean this is in black-and-white?? UUuggghhhhH!" I threatened to make her wear real pirate shackles during the whole movie if she didn't stop complaining) They actually enjoyed it. So, now I get to tick that off my "Great Father Things To Do" list. ... Will force them to watch "The Sea Hawk" on DVD tonight or tomorrow (non-stop thunderstorms here). But I had to explain that while "The Sea Hawk" is a better movie, I wanted them to see these two in the order they were made. "He's a Pirate dancer, He dances for money, Any old dollar will do... "He's a pirate dancer, His dances are funny... 'Cuz he's only got one shoe! Ahhrrr!"
JoshuaRed
Straw, you are spot on. Sea Hawk is the better flick, but both are keepers. Flora Robson is just soooooooo good as Queen Elizabeth...she steals the show. I can't wait till my 4 year old is big enough to enjoy them. He already digs Jack Sparrow bigtime, so easing him into Peter Blood shouldn't be too hard.
Cap'n Pete Straw
He could only take half of the movie at one sitting... but after finishing it, my son also admitted that The Sea Hawk absolutely rocked. He actually sat forward (= stopped slouching!) in his seat during the (many!) sword-fighting scenes. (I turned my son onto Errol Flynn sword-fighting scenes! Chalk off another from my "Great Father Things To Do" list.) Of course, the scenes where Flynn (Sorry: Geoffrey Thorpe) is fighting off three or four Spaniards at a time... great stuff. I myself forgot how great a film this is! * * * * * * * * * On a virtually unrelated side note... I picked up yesterday a Pirate Movie DVD at Walgreens! For One Dollar! It has two films: Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island (I now own THREE copies of this on DVD), and Pirates of the Black Hawk (1958). However, I must tell you that this second movie is actually Il pirata dello sparviero nero, is virtually unwatchable (despite starring Brigitte Bardot's sister Mijanou Bardot), and was hardly worth the dollar. Snooze fest. "He's a Pirate dancer, He dances for money, Any old dollar will do... "He's a pirate dancer, His dances are funny... 'Cuz he's only got one shoe! Ahhrrr!" A PG-13 movie for a four year old. Now that's rich! "The floggings will continue until morale improves!"
