blackjohn Posted June 26, 2006 Posted June 26, 2006 Great Falls Tavern is Threatened! Volunteers are needed TUESDAY to save this local treasure. The National Park Service has instituted its Flood Emergency Plan for the Potomac River, which calls for measures to protect the vulnerable Great Falls Tavern in Maryland. This location is prone to flooding and the Park Service has requested volunteers to help fill sandbags to protect the historic structure. NPS staff will be on-site starting at 2:00 pm TUESDAY, June 27 at the parking area at Great Falls Tavern to fill approximately 500 sandbags. The Park Service estimates they will be working until 8:00 pm. You can help! Join Potomac Conservancy members and staff to help protect this historic landmark. Dress warmly, bring food and water, and prepare to get wet and a little dirty. Please bring a shovel if you have one! Directions to the Great Falls Tavern visitor center in Potomac, MD: From Beltway take exit 41 Clara Barton Parkway West toward Carderock. Take the Clara Barton parkway all the way to the end and take a left at stop sign onto Mac Arthur Blvd. Take MacArthur all the way to the park entrance. Proceed to the fee booth and tell them you are there to help with sandbagging. We will be sandbagging near the maintenance facility. Tell the fee booth collector you are there for a volunteer project and the fee will be waived. From DC- Take M street out of Georgetown. Take left onto Canal Rd. At Chain Bridge bear right and proceed on the Clara Barton Parkway. Take the Clara Barton several miles until it dead ends. Take a left at the stop sign onto MacArthur Blvd. Take MacArthur all the way to the park entrance. Proceed to the fee booth and tell them you are there to help with sandbagging. We will be sandbagging near the maintenance facility. Tell the fee booth collector you are there for a volunteer project and the fee will be waived.
