Jim Cutlass Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 Can anyone possibly tell me where to purchase wooden barrels other than Jas Townsend & Son. They're a might pricy.
kass Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 If you want them for decorative purposes and not for carrying or preserving beverages, you might try local wineries or distilleries. They usually give away old casks for the cost of carting them away. But they do this because they are no longer safe for food use. Townsend's prices are actually some of the cheapest around. Real well-made casks are far more expensive. Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
Jim Cutlass Posted June 9, 2006 Author Posted June 9, 2006 Thank you for the response.I'll check into that.
William Brand Posted June 9, 2006 Posted June 9, 2006 I can't vouch for the quality, but... http://www.mainebucket.com/index.cfm?fusea...84153&pageid=28 http://www.winebarrels.com/pages/barrels.html http://www.beaverbuckets.com/Barrels.htm

Captain Bob Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 I'd been looking for a smallish barrel to use as a "pirate's canteen". I found a couple of sites that might have what you're looking for at less-than-pricey prices. http://www.1000oaksbarrel.com/catalog.html http://www.oldworldbarrel.com/ My only question is, how do you seal them if you don't plan to use them for aging hard liquor? They don't sell pine tar at the local hardware stores and I'm not sure how to use beeswax to coat the inside of the container (the preferred method, if I can figure it out). ~~Cap'n Bob
kass Posted June 10, 2006 Posted June 10, 2006 Cap'n Bob, I think Townsend sells brewer's pitch. If they don't, your local (or online) brewing supply store does. This is what you use to line a food-safe canteen. I believe brewer's pitch contains beeswax, but there's something else in there too... Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
Capt. Bo of the WTF co. Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 Good barrels are in the category of the "General Rule"... "You get what you pay for!"
