Pew
Jamestown Settlement's New Replica Godspeed will lead off 'America's 400th Anniversary' Jamestown Settlement's new re-creation of the Godspeed, one of the three ships that brought America's first permanent English settlers to Virginia in 1607, embarked May 22 on an 80-day sail along the Eastern seaboard to herald " America's 400th Anniversary," an 18-month national commemoration marking the founding of Jamestown. Accompanied by a unique "Landing Party" featuring live performances, historical exhibits and cultural displays, the Godspeed will visit Alexandria, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Newport from late May through July 2006. The six-port tour will include stops at the Alexandria Old Town Waterfront on May 27-June 3; Baltimore Inner Harbor on June 9-12; The Great Plaza at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia on June 16-19; South Street Seaport in New York City on June 27-July 6; the John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse and Fan Pier in Boston on July 14-19; and the Newport Yachting Center in Newport, Rhode Island, on July 25-July 30. Constructed at Rockport Marine, Inc., in Rockport, Maine, the new Godspeed will replace an existing re-creation at Jamestown Settlement, where replicas of the Susan Constant and Discovery also are docked. Construction is under way on a new replica of the Discovery at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, with delivery to Jamestown Settlement scheduled for early 2007. The new Godspeed and Discovery were designed by Tri-Coastal Marine of Richmond, California, based on historically documented tonnages, or cargo capacities, of the original ships and extensive research of 17th-century ships commissioned by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. The Godspeed and Discovery exhibited at Jamestown Settlement today were built in the early 1980s, replicating and replacing vessels that had been created for the 1957 350th-anniversary commemoration of the founding of Jamestown. The Susan Constant, commissioned in 1991, is not being replaced. 2006 GODSPEED SAIL SIX-PORT SCHEDULE OVERVIEW Media Event Launching the Godspeed Sail Morning of Monday, May 22nd at Jamestown Settlement (10 a.m.) In-Port Schedules and Locations Public Hours for Godspeed Tour and Landing Party Festival 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. weekdays; 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. weekends and holidays (Fri-Sun, + May 29th and July 3) Alexandria Dates: May 27 – June 3 Location: Alexandria Old Town Waterfront (Founders Park/Torpedo Factory/City Marina/Waterfront Park) Opening Day Media Event: May 27 at 11 a.m. – Invitation Only Baltimore Dates: June 9 – June 12 Location: Baltimore Inner Harbor (401 Light Street is the main entrance) Opening Day Media Event: June 9 at 11 a.m. – Invitation Only Philadelphia Dates: June 16 – June 19 Location: The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing (Columbus Blvd. at Market Street) Opening Day Media Event: June 16 at 11 a.m. – Invitation Only New York City Dates: June 27 – July 6 Location: South Street Seaport Museum’s Pier 16 (South Street at Fulton Street) Opening Day Media Event: June 27 at 11 a.m. – Invitation Only Boston Dates: July 14 – July 19 Location: John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse (1 Courthouse Way) and adjacent Fan Pier Opening Day Media Event: July 14 at 11 a.m. – Invitation Only Newport Dates: July 25 – July 30 (Note: Public hours in Newport begin at noon) Location: Newport Yachting Center (America’s Cup Avenue at 4 Commercial Wharf) Opening Day Media Event: July 25 (Noon) – Invitation Only , Skull and Quill Society , The Watch Dog "We are 21st Century people who play a game of dress-up and who spend a lot of time pissing and moaning about the rules of the game and whether other people are playing fair."
