Well, here in Escondido I didn't see or hear anything that day. I guess it was only in LA. I'm actually tired of the whole thing! There's so many ignorant people who don't understand what's going on! This isn't about running all the Mexicans outta here. It's simple, you want to live in this country then you have to be here legally. No free rides and expect the government to take care of you just because you ran across the border and popped out a kid in our hospitals. No other country would allow this crap except us, it makes us look pretty pathetic! I'm also tired of the fact that I'm an US citizen and also a California native and illegals are getting better benefits than me. It's insane and unfair! Things need to change in their countries so they don't see the reason to leave. Perhaps if their governments were better they wouldn't try to come over here illegally. But I doubt that will happen, it just seems things keep getting worse, not better......sighs....

My opion: if people think so highly of the country they come from and wave their countries flags for them, then PLEASE go back to where you came from and make a difference there!

This is the USA, the spoken word is ENGLISH and our National Anthem is sung in ENGLISH - not some words in another language with the words changed to fit their wants, it's disgraceful to our flag and our country.

What would these people think if we all went to Mexico or some other country and demanded rights for our being illegals there? We'd be laughed off the planet!

Sorry, but the people who come here illegally, do not deserve any rights what-so-ever! :o

I love it Dorian, I love it so much! I have to pass that on to everyone I know. It's so true that it's scary! This whole thing has spun completely put of control. It will be hard to restore order cuz this crap has gone on for so long. The illegals are so used to the free rides that to take it away now will cause violence, riots and wars are slowly starting. It's a scary world will live in now.

The Bill of No Rights

We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior and secure the blessings of debt free liberty to ourselves and our great great-great grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other liberal bedwetters.

We hold these truths to be self-evident: That a whole lot of people were confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim that they require a Bill of Non Rights.

* ARTICLE I -- You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV or any form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

* ARTICLE II -- You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means the freedom for everyone, not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the world is full of idiots and probably always will be.

* ARTICLE III -- You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful. Do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy.

* ARTICLE IV -- You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generations of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes.

* ARTICLE V -- You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice but, from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in government run health care.

* ARTICLE VI -- You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

* ARTICLE VII -- You do not have the right to the possessions of others. If you rob, cheat or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen TV or a life of leisure.

* ARTICLE VIII -- You don't have the right to demand that our children risk their lives in foreign wars to soothe your aching conscience. We hate oppressive governments and won't lift a finger to stop you from going to fight, if you'd like. However, we do not enjoy parenting the entire world and do not want to spend so much of our time battling each and every little tyrant with a military uniform and a funny hat.

* ARTICLE IX -- You don't have the right to a job. All of us sure want all of you to have one, and will gladly help you in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful.

* ARTICLE X -- You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness -- which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

If you agree that a understanding of no rights is necessary to "Secure the Blessings of Liberty," I strongly urge you to refer this to as many people as you can, or link it from your own webpages. No, you don't HAVE to .... Nothing tragic will befall you should you NOT refer it. I just think it's about time common sense is allowed to re-emerge in our society and flourish again. Thank you!!!

Yo ho ho! Or does nobody actually say that?

They had the protest in Iowa City, too.

Honestly, it demeans those immigrants who came over here LEGALLY! I feel for them!

If the Illegals think that obtain passes into the US is hard... umm... HELLO! I wonder why? This country is only so big... it CAN'T handle EVERY populace in the world! We'd become worse than China! Russia is large than America... let them go there!

Unfortunately, both the legals and illegals are all playing off each other. Do they REALLY understand what is being said about the new bill? What of the Indians? The French? the Russians? The Middle Easterners? So... the Spanish speaking folk need to stand out more so than they? Doesn't seem fair and is rather prejudice to me!

I find it stupid and silly that folks be going out there on that day, legal or illegal (which would have been a PERFECT chance for an Immigration raid)... to march about and say "we want rights!" when they are not even citizens! Hey, our Forefather's set up some standards! LIVE BY THEM! No citizenship, no rights! Like all immagrants who came here before... come in the FRONT DOOR and work hard for it... not the side door or the window and just kinda work the system like some whore!

I do so like the statement that Ben Franklin made about those who give up liberty for safety deserve neither liberty or safety.

I agree... this country has become too soft and too full of itself. Best watch out... were a imploding in upon ourself!

Illegals.. go home, find a proper way to get in and be patient. If you can't get in I think that's telling you something there. Don't ruin it for those who are here legally!

Exactly, Lady B!

My housemate (and former lover) is a Canadian, who came to this country to study and work over ten years ago. He did everything legally, first obtaining his student visa, then getting his Green Card, then just last week finally obtained his U.S. Citizenship. All during that time, he paid into the U.S. Social Security system, paid for his own health care, obeyed the laws, and did the entire process legally. He is so thrilled to now be a citizen of America!

So, I fully concur that those wishing to receive the benefits of our country and all she offers do so legally, follow the rules, go the legal route by obtaining a work or student visa, Green Card, and then finally citizenship.

I wonder if one of the most important steps on our journey is the one in which we throw away the map.

IMHO it would have been a great day for INS to round up a lot of them at once.

if you enter mexico illegally and are caught, you go to jail and wait. we need to do this.

Also couldnt this have been considered a terrorist attack? trying to ruin the local economy at least for a day? Some bigger business that could have been affected make $50K a day.

ok, for those of you who feel the same way I do...might I suggest you check this out...

http://www.illegalimmigrantprotest.com/petition.htm

Sign the petition and tell our cowarding Congress to do what they swore to do and uphold the laws of this country.

Also, please note that there are several opportunities to make your voices heard in a number of ways.

One of which, I did before I even found the above website. That is to contact the companies that were shown by the media as supporting May 1st events. Contact them and let them know of your displeasure. I suggest to skip using their products for at least one month.

I sent a letter to Gallo Wines and almost immediately got a reply saying that they do not hire illegals etc...that the information was wrong, etc.

I wrote back stating that if that is true I and others would be interested in seeing that placed in the papers on and tube as prominently as the other was. But, obviously the companies are starting to feel the heat.

Anyway, check out the website.

Thanks.

I did not read everyone else's posts yet... I will come back for that later.

From my Chicago office window on South Michigan Avenue (14th floor), I have an unobstructed view of Lake Michigan and, therefore, overlook Grant Park. I had the opportunity to watch hundreds and thousands of people gather throughout the day of May 1 in the park below my window. All day long they were leaving by the hundreds, but seemed to be arriving by the thousands. It was a rather impressive sight.

But you asked my opinion.

This is a country of immigrants, and virtually everything we are is based on the fact that almost all our ancestors (yes, I am part Native American, so don't pick nits with me about this) came from other countries. There must always be a place in this country for immigrants.

That being said, we are talking about illegal immigrants. They are illegal because they are in our country by circumstances contrary to the laws which we, as a democratic society, have voted for and established to specifically address them and their circumstances.

Where am I going with this?

I do not have a clear response to the question, but my gut feeling is that we need better laws and methods to treat these people as humanely as we possibly can, in a fair manner. Perhaps we need to grant better work visas and carve for them a better niche in our society that accommodates them as friendly foreigners (and not as outright criminals), so they will come forward to be counted and dealt with in, as I repeat, a fair and humane manner.

These are people. While some may have malicious intent (thinking 9/11 here), almost all are simply yearning to breathe free. We created a desireable land and society, and the consequence we must face is that some others want to share in that. And we must find better ways to accommodate/deal with that.

IMHO.

Please do NOT read this post as support of aggresive policies to shove our democratic ideals down the throats of foreign governments. That is another topic thread.

...Another thought...

I heard part of a news report that someone, somewhere is trying to pass some legislation or law to allow the Pledge of Allegiance to be translated and spoken in Spanish. (I missed the entire story, so I assume this is for a Spanish-speaking school)...

Here is my take on this.

I am all for preserving native culture and heritage. HOWEVER, I feel that this country's Pledge of Allegiance should be always spoken and understood in English. I support it being translated into every known language so that anybosy anywhere can understand (for scholarly purposes) what we are about, but when spoken as an actual oath, it should be in English. Always.

IMHO.

So, I just now saw this story on the news. It is the National Anthem that is being considered. And President Bush announced in a major press conference that he wants it only sung in English ... so you all probably think I sound like a fool, 'cuz the entire country knows about this, and I am only just catching up to speed.

Erg. My opinions are the same as President Bush? That's disturbing.

Anyway, my opinion stays the same on this issue. Translate it to understand it, but sing it in English. After all, I have sought out English translations of the French and German national anthems because I could not understand what they were sayng ("Dutch land, Dutch land, underwear?").

BTW, Francis Scott Key is a distant relative of mine (the Key family line is part of my family tree... Francis Scott was a cousin of some sort to one of my ancestors, but I cannot recall the exact details.)

First my grandparents came over to this country, came throug Ellis Island and they waited in holding till they were processed and allowed to enter. My Grandmother came over as an indenture servant in order to pay for her way here. So, LEGAL immigrants I certainly approve. But, CBS even had a article on their website about how much money the US could save if we were without Illegals for one day. The savings would be in the millions of dollars. They are uping the cost of health care, they costing us extra in all types of social services, and they are holding wages down.

The Roman Empire, which we were based upon in various forms, fell not because of lack of strength perse...but because of lack of will. They fell because their borders were over run from the invading hordes. sound familiar????

Ok, breathe...relax, breathe...inhale...exhale...sigh...I am not going to say EVERYTHING I am thinking on this subject...the above is a very abreviated version.

Anyway, take a look at the petition...think about how to get your voice heard...and do something about it.

One of our Presidents said this in a speech...

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of his creed, or birthplace, or origin. Butthis is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room but for one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American People."
