QueenLaDeDa Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 A Nautical Renaissance At the Port of Ilwaco May 18-21 & June 9-12 2006 THE OFFICIAL PIRATE INVASION: Saturday, May 20th Noon-5pm Port of Ilwaco - Ilwaco, WA (Located on the "Long Beach Peninsula" - over the bridge from Astoria,OR.) Make way for tall ships, sailors, pirates, seas shanties, muzzleloaders and mountain men as the Port of Ilwaco comes to life with characters, music and activities reminiscent of the 1700- 1800’s. Tall ships, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftan will be in port offering dockside tours, adventure and battle sails... Last year's tall ships and pirantics were a hit! Over a thousand visitors attended. Additional nautical events and activities will coincide with this year’s tall ships visits. NO ADMISSION FEE - All events free unless otherwise noted. The port welcomes back a friendly band of cutthroat pirates: The Rifle Loot & Salvage Co. Mustering at high noon on Saturday, May 20th - Cannons and muskets will fire as pirates raise the black flag to commemorate this year’s official “Pirate Invasion”. In addition to black powder and pirates greeting visitors to the port, activities include a living history pirate encampment with a weapons, cargo and knot tying display. Taste a "ships biscuit" and get advice on how to prevent scurvy! Sword fighting demonstrations and a “whack a pirate” booth for children, presented by the Empire of Chivalry and Steel, Duchy of Terra Norte. For $1 children can try their hand at sword fighting a pirate and receive an official certificate. (Times TBA) Topics of these programs may include “The Graveyard of the Pacific,” early exploration of the Columbia River by ships from several countries, the legacy of Captain Robert Grey, Lewis and Clark’s search for a fur trading ship, as well as other related themes. PIRATE OPEN MIC - Hosted by Open Pirate Mike. 4-5 pm at the Port of Ilwaco Pavillion. The evening of May 20, there will be a “Dinner with Lewis and Clark” at Fort Columbia State Park’s historic theater. Living Historians, representing members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition will be among the audience. A dinner featuring period appropriate food will be included in the ticket price. A silent auction will be held to raise money for the Friends of the Columbia River Gateway, a non-profit group supporting interpretative programs and events for the Long Beach Area State Parks.
