MadMike
Recently received a copy of "Treasure Island" with Charlton Heston, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie, which was released in 1990 under Turner Home Entertainment, is only available in VHS. It was produced by Agamemnon Films in association with British Lion. Information on the movie and cast can be found on IMDB.com- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100813/ The movie is slow at times; it was a made-for-TV flick and not a threatrical release (did I mention it's faithful to the book?). The attention to detail in the clothes is pretty good. These are the nastiest looking pirates I've seen on the tube since POTC. Overall, if you're lucky enough to find a copy, get it while the prices are relatively low. I ordered a used copy through Amazon.com. As for inquiries regarding a DVD, perhaps we should send them here- Turner Broadcasting System One CNN Center Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Phone: 404-827-1700 Yours, &c. Pirate Petee
That is an awesome version, I forget his name, but the actor who plays Billy Bones, best pirate ever in my opinion.
blackjohn
Oliver Reed. Best pirate film ever made imho. My Home on the Web The Pirate Brethren Gallery Dreams are the glue that holds reality together.
Fox
I second Blackjohn's humble opinion! What really made the film for me was that all the pirates were just so believable. They really looked like - and came across as - cut-throat men of the sea who could torture a prisoner, reef a topsail, or flaunt it in a New Providence tavern with equal and consummate skill. I reckon it's an ideal study piece for anyone (authentic or fantasy) who wants to convince people they are a pirate. blackjohn
Thanks Ed! ...and the guy who played Dr. Livesy also played the AT-AT landing force commander in Empire Strikes Back. But I digress. I've heard rumors that there was an extended edition of the film. Don't know if it is true. Anyway... Yep! I'll agree. Those guys had a "we mean business" look to them that one rarely sees on a re-enactor. My Home on the Web The Pirate Brethren Gallery Dreams are the glue that holds reality together. blackjohn
As my mentor used to say, "wish in one hand; sh-t in the other. See which fills up first." Thus, gentlemen, I suggest that one of us must start a petition! My Home on the Web The Pirate Brethren Gallery Dreams are the glue that holds reality together. Fox
I suggest two petitions. One to get TI brought out on DVD. The other to ensure that all future pirate films are made with the same quality of cast and production. MadMike
The soundtrack by The Chieftans was great, really put the movie into it's historical perspective (gawd, hate it when period flicks use modern tunes). I recognized a few of the characters from other series, one appeared in "Sharpes Rifles". Reed (Billy Bones) was so nasty at the end of his existence that I just about left the room (expecting to be covered with his phlem). Indeed, best pirate flick ever! Yours, &c. Hawkyns
Well. I hate to be a 'me-too', but it's impossible not to with this one. Loved the movie when I saw it, got the DVD about 6-7 years ago. Detail, costume, milieu- all great stuff. We need more like it! Cascabel
I suspect that this was released in a theatrical version in Europe, with possibly longer running time. I have seen theatrical posters for sale from time to time on eBay in a foreign language, but I don't recall which one. It also was released on vhs in the UK under the title "Devil's Treasure". I also would love to have it on dvd, and have e-mailed Agamemnon Films requesting information, but they have not seen fit to reply...... >>>>> Cascabel
