Demon Cat Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 I'm going to make some for my fiancee (and later myself). He wants something "poofy" that can by tucked into the top of his boots. This material looked promising: http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?got...f&fabric_id=103 Pattern recommendations? There this simple one for early 1600's: http://reddawn.net/costume/breeches.htm What sort, if any, changes would need to be made to it? Should I use something else entirely?
Patrick Hand Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 These are a little tighter in the knee..... but they are very close to period (OK so I used denim.... they were to test if the pattern worked.....) http://photobucket.com/albums/b97/PatrickH...nt=Breeches.jpg
Rumba Rue Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 Be careful that the material isn't too lightweight, otherwise if you'r sitting on haybales or wooden benches, you're going to find things stuck in your behind that aren't going to be fun.
Red-Handed Jill Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 Also, be sure to wash the fabric beforehand. Breeches are particularly unforgiving when it comes to shrinkage. Those below-knee bands will suddenly be positioned in the middle of your knee - not good. Do I know this from personal experience? Yes, I do. I found some gorgeous dark blue fabric and proceeded to make a pair of breeches from it (older style, with ties below the knee rather than buttons or buckles.) I allowed for what I thought was a reasonable amount of shrinkage for that type of fabric. The first time I washed them, I discovered that my calculations were not entirely accurate.

Is a 5oz fabric heavy enough? There is also a 7oz version of it available. My "client" has requested his breeches be of a relatively fine material as he wishes to protray a well-off captain sort of character, so, while wearability is important, I don't want something that will look too course/heavy.
