 I was wondering if you guys can tell me some songs you like that have to do with sailing, pirates, or anything that makes you feel all warm inside that gives the image if sailing your own boat out into the sea (or something like that)

I like "Beyond the Sea" by Robbie Williams

it could be theme music from like a movie or something too. B)

Tis a bit sappy as a song, but it does make me feel good. The song "Sailing" by Chris Cross, from back in the early 80s I think it was.

I wonder if one of the most important steps on our journey is the one in which we throw away the map.

-- Loreena McKennitt

My fathers knew of wind and tide, and my blood is maritime.

-- Stan Rogers

I don't pretend to be captain weird.

I just do what I do.

Barret's Privateers of course!

by the late great Stan Rogers

*roots around for lyrics*

ahh here we go

O the year was 1778

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

A letter of marque came from the king

To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen

God damn them all

I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold

We'd fire no guns, shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier,

The last of Barrett's Privateers

2. O Elcid Barrett cried the town

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

For twenty brave men all fishermen who

Would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all . . . .

3. The Antelope sloop was a sickening site

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

She'd list to the port and her sails in rags

And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

God damn them all . . . .

4. On the King's birthday we put to sea

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

Ninety-one days to Montego Bay

Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all . . . .

5. On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

When a great big Yankee hove in sight

With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight

God damn them all . . . .

6. The Yankee lay low down with gold

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

She was broad and fat and loose in stays

But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all . . . .

7. Then at length she stood two cables away

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

Our cracked four-pounders made awful din

But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all . . . .

8. The Antelope shook and pitched on her side

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs

And the main truck carried off both me legs

God damn them all . . . .

9. Now here I lay in my twenty-third year

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now

It's been six years since we sailed away

And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all . . . .

now lesse if i can find that streaming link for all you folks wot never heard of this song * doesnt think thats likely on THIS forum heh, but ya never know*

So the real question is do you prefer Ride of Valkaries with or with out the chorus?

Hi all,

I need to move this topic to Sea Shanties, it's better served there.

Rumba

Haha! Now, welcome to my playground!

Thanks Rumba

No no. They just aren't singing what I'm always hearing in the music. Kind of like when a movie is made from a book you really love and the characters just are not how you "saw" them, but the rest is great. That's what I've always felt about that piece of music and the singing. And of course I like my version better. B)

I don't recall who wrote it, but I really like the song "Sailor's Prayer" as performed by the Corsairs.

I was at work today when I remembered that there multiple songs with the title "Sailor's Prayer" or some variation thereof, so I figured I should clarify yesterday's statement. The song I am talking about is the one with the chorus that goes, "I will not lie me down, this rain a-raging. I will not lie me down in such a storm. And if this night be unblessed, I shall not take my rest until I reach another shore." I am not talking about the song praying for revenge against people who sell bad beer to sailors. That one is amusing, but it doesn't give me the warm fuzzies inside like the first one I mentioned does.

Hmmm.. there be plenty...

But, a grande song I likes;

Brandy, by Looking Glass

Says lots about sailors, if ye listen...

No way!!! I love that song and have ever since I heard it as a kid. Also "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Cool Change".
