Pirate_Paul Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 I was wondering if you guys can tell me some songs you like that have to do with sailing, pirates, or anything that makes you feel all warm inside that gives the image if sailing your own boat out into the sea (or something like that) I like "Beyond the Sea" by Robbie Williams it could be theme music from like a movie or something too. CaptainCiaran Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Tis a bit sappy as a song, but it does make me feel good. The song "Sailing" by Chris Cross, from back in the early 80s I think it was. I wonder if one of the most important steps on our journey is the one in which we throw away the map. -- Loreena McKennitt My fathers knew of wind and tide, and my blood is maritime. -- Stan Rogers I don't pretend to be captain weird. I just do what I do. -- Johnny Depp

I have the version of a Dutch pirate choir, The Waterlanders which gives precisely the feeling you mention.. it's great If you im me i'll send the file or their whole album if you want (anyone who wants their music im me and i'll send it, they're great and they're Dutch songs too maybe ye like to hear that also )
fergal Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Barret's Privateers of course! by the late great Stan Rogers *roots around for lyrics* ahh here we go O the year was 1778 How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now A letter of marque came from the king To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen God damn them all I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold We'd fire no guns, shed no tears Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, The last of Barrett's Privateers 2. O Elcid Barrett cried the town How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now For twenty brave men all fishermen who Would make for him the Antelope's crew God damn them all . . . . 3. The Antelope sloop was a sickening site How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now She'd list to the port and her sails in rags And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags God damn them all . . . . 4. On the King's birthday we put to sea How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now Ninety-one days to Montego Bay Pumping like madmen all the way God damn them all . . . . 5. On the ninety-sixth day we sailed again How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now When a great big Yankee hove in sight With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight God damn them all . . . . 6. The Yankee lay low down with gold How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now She was broad and fat and loose in stays But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days God damn them all . . . . 7. Then at length she stood two cables away How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now Our cracked four-pounders made awful din But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in God damn them all . . . . 8. The Antelope shook and pitched on her side How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs And the main truck carried off both me legs God damn them all . . . . 9. Now here I lay in my twenty-third year How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now It's been six years since we sailed away And I just made Halifax yesterday God damn them all . . . . now lesse if i can find that streaming link for all you folks wot never heard of this song * doesnt think thats likely on THIS forum heh, but ya never know* http://www.stanrogers.net/bp.ram

So the real question is do you prefer Ride of Valkaries with or with out the chorus? Duchess
Charity Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Oh? What "ram" file did i just save to disk then? It doesn't play...just found out
Rumba Rue Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Hi all, I need to move this topic to Sea Shanties, it's better served there. Rumba
Duchess Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Hi all, I need to move this topic to Sea Shanties, it's better served there. Rumba Haha! Now, welcome to my playground! Thanks Rumba Duchess
Captain Jacob Badger Posted May 7, 2005 Posted May 7, 2005 Wi' chorus.........the voices be liken the sirens of old........ahh....wagner.....weird, cos I likes osric tenticles on a sunny day......but hey..(shrugs).. Yes, it be pointy…..and ye be at the wrong side o’ it.
Duchess Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Interesting. I've always been opposed to the chorus myself.
Captain Jacob Badger Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 But that be the most dramatic part o' the piece.......s'liken listenin' t' the news at ten......an' naught hearin' the bells!!........tsk ...ye young uns...... Yes, it be pointy…..and ye be at the wrong side o’ it.
Duchess Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 No no. They just aren't singing what I'm always hearing in the music. Kind of like when a movie is made from a book you really love and the characters just are not how you "saw" them, but the rest is great. That's what I've always felt about that piece of music and the singing. And of course I like my version better. Duchess
Captain Jacob Badger Posted May 8, 2005 Posted May 8, 2005 Hmmmm....(scratches beard)....I see's where ye comin' from.....never thought of it that way...(plays cd again..).........sortta......interupts the flow a little....hmmm, always thought that it were just a dramatic build up 'opree' style......the leadin' o' the souls an' that......oh well....each t' their version aye ..cheers Yes, it be pointy…..and ye be at the wrong side o’ it.

Zath Chauvert Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 I don't recall who wrote it, but I really like the song "Sailor's Prayer" as performed by the Corsairs.
Zath Chauvert Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 I don't recall who wrote it, but I really like the song "Sailor's Prayer" as performed by the Corsairs. I was at work today when I remembered that there multiple songs with the title "Sailor's Prayer" or some variation thereof, so I figured I should clarify yesterday's statement. The song I am talking about is the one with the chorus that goes, "I will not lie me down, this rain a-raging. I will not lie me down in such a storm. And if this night be unblessed, I shall not take my rest until I reach another shore." I am not talking about the song praying for revenge against people who sell bad beer to sailors. That one is amusing, but it doesn't give me the warm fuzzies inside like the first one I mentioned does.
Dorian Lasseter Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 Hmmm.. there be plenty... But, a grande song I likes; Brandy, by Looking Glass Says lots about sailors, if ye listen... Truly, D. Lasseter Captain, The Lucy Propria Virtute Audax --- In Hoc Signo Vinces Ni Feidir An Dubh A Chur Ina Bhan Air "If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me." Deuteronomy 32:41 Envy and its evil twin - It crept in bed with slander - Idiots they gave advice - But Sloth it gave no answer - Anger kills the human soul - With butter tales of Lust - While Pavlov's Dogs keep chewin' - On the legs they never trust... Tempest Fitzgerald Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 No way!!! I love that song and have ever since I heard it as a kid. Also "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Cool Change". ...Or lay these bones in an unworthy urn, Tombless, with no rememberance over them: Either our history shall with full mouth Speak freely of our acts, or else our grave, Like a Turkish mute, shall have a toungueless mouth, Not worshipped with a waxen epitaph...
