my myspace list... hasn't been evaluated in three years so this may be a little out of date...

# The Duelists

# Shakespeare in Love

# The Matrix

# Conan the Barbarian

# The Thin Red Line

# The Princess Bride

# Treasure Island (the good one, with Charleton Heston)

# Star Wars

# Ferris Bueller's Day Off

# Kung Fu Hustle

# Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

# Jeremiah Johnson

# Hero

# The Three Musketeers

# Bulletproof Monk

# High Fidelity

# Empire of the Sun

# Blade Runner (original version!)

# Little Big Man

Hmmm... yeah, I can see some things I'd change. Like... where's Silent Running? Aliens? Fifth Element? A Bridge Too Far?

I am much of a movie buff and have been ordered by Captain Brand to watch a few that I have missed through out the years.

That aside when someone asks what my favorite movies are these are the few I do not have to think about:

"The Princess Bride"

"Waking Ned Devine"

"Young Frankenstein"

I have watched these over and over again. I can't find my copy of "Waking Ned Devine". :(

Looking at BlackJohn's list inspired me to throw in my favs... And to be honest with a few differences, I could have almost cut and pasted his list.

# The Matrix

# Conan the Barbarian

# The Princess Bride

# Labyrinth

# Star Wars

# Leon "The Professional" (with the "Fifth Element" being a close runner up here, but I thought only one Luc Besson film would be better)

# The Usual Suspects

# Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

# Hero

# The Killer (the early John Woo Hong Kong film)

# Momento

# Aliens

# Blade Runner (original version!)

# Lord of the Rings

# Immortal Beloved (I am a HUGE fan of Gary Oldman which makes me want to add "Sid and Nancy" as well....)

# Moulin Rouge (although Lurman's Romeo and Juliet could easily fill in here as well)

I think that tops the list or I could go on all night....

Wow. So many of you have so many favorite movies. There are lots of movies that I like and have seen many times but not so many that I would consider my favorites.

I have a new favorite movie. It even aces out my previous favorite movie (Raiders of the Lost Ark), so I'm sharing.

Interstate 60

Be forewarned, it is not for all tastes - it's sort of the Alice in Wonderland road trip movie - very thought provoking and interesting. It feels like a much-beloved niche book about growing up; one set on an imaginary route, going through imaginary towns, populated by fascinating imaginary characters who encounter extreme, but well-defined situations. Yet it isn't from a book at all - it's a movie idea that Bob Gale had when he got frustrated with Hollywood. The characters are very well drawn, the acting is top notch and the situations reveal important points. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I can't recommend it more highly. Brush up on your slightly loopy metaphysics and enjoy a really fascinating ride. I watched it three times this weekend before ordering my own copy and reluctantly sending it back to Netflix.

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

Anything with Gary Oldman is worth watching...

And how come this isn't in Pirate Pop??? :D

Well, you may not realize it but your looking at the remains of what was once a very handsome woman!

Bess, I would soooo agree with you, had I never seen the "Lost in Space" remake... :D Even a stellar actor like Oldman couldn't make a good impression with that script....

But on a more positive note, I do so love "Immortal Beloved", it is probably Oldman at his absolute best acting wise. Although I still like the overall move "Leon: The Professional" better....

Agreed.

He is simply a joy to watch whatever he is portraying.

Oldman is one of the highlights, natch. (But he's definitely not the only one.)

This isn't in Pop because it's not specifically about pirate movies. (Wow...I started this the first time I was using this ID...wayyy back in early '05.)

If we're going to broaden Pop beyond piracy, I'll be more than happy to move it there, though.

It's kind of difficult to specify a "favorite" movie since, for me, it's a moving targer, however movies I have greatly enjoyed include:

The Matrix

Pirates of the Caribbean #1

Treasure Island (1990)

Quigley Down Under

The Shootist

Goldfinger

Funeral in Berlin

Day of the Jackal (1973)

Cars

Ratatouille

Age of Consent

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

Star Trek, The Wrath of Kahn

Out of Africa

Regarding a film by the name 1612 mentioned upthread.

I'm about half-way through (had to stop to run some errands) and... WHOA.

Talk about some beautifully shot graphic violence. One of the most artistic violent films I've watched in a long time. So far, I'm giving it two thumbs up!

Treasure Island (1990)

Oh yeah! I have to add the Charlton Heston version of Treasure Island to my list.

It still pisses me off that show is not available on DVD. Especially with all the shite

pyrate films that are available out there.

You can go to http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=14882, click on "Suggest this movie" in the upper right corner and register a vote for them to do a DVD. I agree, this is quite possibly the best pirate movie ever made and definitely the best version of Treasure Island ever made. It does seem like they missed the boat by not releasing it during the height of the PotC interest.

Just got done watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy again and should have put it on my list. Wow!
