Mission
I did a look back and didn't see a topic on this, so I thought I'd throw it out there. Things are kinda' slow here... What are your favorite movies? I think you can tell a lot about a person by the movies they like. I'm going to suggest you stretch beyond the movie POTC, since many people have a bias there ("Yes, we know that one. Anything else?"). Here are a whole slew of mine: Animal House (IMHO, Tim Matheson is second only to John Goodman as far as being underrated as an actor.) Back to the Future ("Ah... Are you telling me you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?!) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ("...") Casablanca Cool Runnings Goldfinger The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (Eli Wallach  ) Gremlins 2: The New Batch The Hudsucker Proxy Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Patton Raiders of the Lost Ark (What a great movie...) Singin' in the Rain The Sting When Harry Met Sally Yojimbo How about you? What are your faves? Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

Fancy
Hi Mission! You didn't list Star Wars?!? Well, let's see, here's a few of my favorites in no particular order: O Brother, Where Art Thou? ("A woman is the most fiendish instrument of torture ever devised to bedevil the days of man." Ulysses Everett McGill) The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (love the Dorian Gray character... "Who are you?" ... "I'm complicated.") Dracula (with Gary Oldman) Treasure Planet (love the John Rzeznik song, "I'm Still Here") Monsters, Inc. Stargate (with Kurt Russell) Tombstone (love Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, my fave!) Troy (the fight scenes rock! fave is between Hector and Achilles) The Three Muskateers (got my copy straight from the King of America himself! ... Porthos the Pirate is my fave!) Benny and Joon The Fifth Element Chocolate possibly my favorite movie in which to look at Johnny Depp LOL! The Lord of the Rings movies (didn't follow the books exactly, but still, very good.) Lilo and Stitch Fancy
CaptainCiaran
I so rarely go to movies, or even rent them, but there are a few that stand out as favorites I've seen: 1) All the Harry Potter movies 2) Out of Africa 3) Steel Magnolias 4) Chocolat 5) Close Encounters of the Third Kind 6) Clue 7) Out on a Limb 8) Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean 9) Ruthless People, and Outrageous Fortune (I love Bette Midler) 10) Rocky Horror Picture Show (let's do the time warp again!) 11) Priscilla Queen of the Desert (I had to include one queer movie!) And numerous old b&w films from the 20s and 30s, especially with Mae West, Greta Garbo, Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, etc. I shall restrain myself from mentioning favorite porn flicks!!! I wonder if one of the most important steps on our journey is the one in which we throw away the map. -- Loreena McKennitt My fathers knew of wind and tide, and my blood is maritime. -- Stan Rogers I don't pretend to be captain weird. Mission
Hi Mission! You didn't list Star Wars?!? Hmm. To borrow a line from your lines, Fancy, my thoughts on Star Wars are complicated. I have a deep attachment to the OT (that new trilogy is just...stuff and nonsense...to me. Midichlorians...jeez, George. You can do better than that!) However, in looking back at them about 10 years after Jedi left the theatres, I found them to be lacking in important ways - they're not complex enough or deep enough...or something. I still have this Star Wars Action Figure connection from my youth, however. Call it youthful baggage. Sometimes I think of them (particularly the first movie) as favorites, sometimes I don't. I guess they're not really favorites of mine, they're just sort of cherished as a stepping stone from my youth. Does that make sense? I almost put the new Zatoichi movie on my list. While I realize it wasn't true to the original series, it was extremely artfully made. Takeshi Kitano is a very interesting artist. I also almost added Amelie, but I don't own it, so I guess it doesn't belong on my favorites list. (It's still a cool movie.) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
Fancy
Yes, I think I understand, Mission. I was just surprised is all. :) I remember seeing the first Star Wars at the theater when I was 13, and I thought it was the best movie in the world at the time. I wanted to be just like Princess Leah, of course, and catch the adorable eye of Han Solo! but now, it's like other movies I remember loving in my youth, that aren't just as fabulous as I thought they were, but don't get me wrong, I still love the Star Wars movies, all of them. And I liked the Phantom Menace a lot. Clone Wars is quite lacking. the Matrix is another where the sequels were disappointing. The first movie was great, but they only got worse and the last was pathetic, they went so far off the original theme... to resque the human race from the machines and being batteries, to saving only Zion and a single fight between Neo and Mr. Smith. I was so disappointed. Oh, and I had to add Chocolat to my list above (Thank you CaptainCiaran for the reminder, I can't believe I left if off my list.) Capt Grey
 You mean there are other movies besides Star Wars? (Anybody who knows me will get the joke. I am an unapologetic, middle-aged Star Wars fan. Although I agree that Attack of the Clones was lacking in a decent script.) Actually, I love the Harry Potter movies. My son and I dress up for the openings: Lord of the Rings anything by Pixar (Toy Story, Finding Nemo) Disney classics (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) anything by Tim Burton (I loved the ending of Planet of the Apes) Yes, I'm weird. Captain, we always knew you were a whoopsie. Rumors of my death are entirely premature.

Fancy
Capt. Grey, y'all look adorable! And I have to mention... I'm a Tim Burton fan too. I love Nightmare Before Christmas, it's a halloween through Christmas classic in my house! Christine, I just watched Ever After the other night with my daughter (before that we saw A Cinderella Story with Hillary Duff, and I told her about this movie and how much better it was... still is. I love it. I've always liked Drew Barrymore as well, she's really great in 50 First Dates! And thanks for reminding me of Labyrinth, I've not seen that one in a long long time, and I love David Bowie in it. Which reminds me for some odd reason of another of my family's faves... The Dark Crystal. I need to get those on DVD. Fancy
CaptainCiaran
Yes, Fancy, Chocolat is a great movie, so magically delicious. It was sorta the first hint (to my knowledge) of Johnny Depp leaning toward piracy. Thanks, Mission, for mentioning Amelie. That, too, was a wonderful off-beat film. I'll bet La Melfoucon knows of that one, oui? Hawkyns
Well, lessee... Zulu (first 'grownup' movie I ever saw. I was 7. this may explain a lot ) The Wild Geese Cromwell The Three Musketeers (the real one from the 70's, not that Disney cr*p) The Four Musketeers LoTR Gladiator King Arthur (last summer's version) The Last Valley Shakespeare in Love Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves Cutthroat Island Plunket and Maclean Brotherhood of the Wolf The Full Monty Rob Roy The Great Escape The Great Race (agreed, Christine. PUSH THE BUTTON, MAX!!) and a particular penchant for schlock sword and sorcery flicks There are more, but that'll do for now. Hawkyns Cannon add dignity to what otherwise would be merely an ugly brawl I do what I do for my own reasons. I do not require anyone to follow me. Hawkyns
Nah, that was almost mainstream. I mean movies like David Carradine's "Warrior and the Sorceress" or Richard Moll, Lee Horsely, and David Lynch in the "The Sword and the Sorcerer". And let's not forget the Deathstalker series. JoshuaRed
Hey Hawkyns, I'm with you on Plunkett and Maclane....what a terrific odd little movie! It had all the guts and grit that a good pirate movie SHOULD have, but hasn't YET. And it proved my theory that Rob Carlisle would be stellar as an outlaw sailor. Here's some of my other faves FWIW in no certain order: Ravenous Memento The Spaghetti Westerns True Romance Kill Bill 1 & 2 High Society Casablanca Sahara Bram Stoker's Dracula Office Space Pulp Fiction Nosferatu Down To The Sea In Ships Romeo Is Bleeding The Professional Treasure Island (all versions) All classic Pirate films Anything dark and noir, chock full of character actors like Gary Oldman or Peter Posthelwaite makes my day! Fancy
Anything dark and noir, chock full of character actors like Gary Oldman or Peter Posthelwaite makes my day! I'm with you on that one, Joshua Red, althought I don't know who Peter P. is really. (probably would if I saw him, but the name doesn't ring a bell) But anything dark and noir I also like a lot! Loved Gary Oldman as Dracula. Patrick Hand, The Addams Family movies with Raul Julia are my faves! I loved the series on tv when I was a kid, but Raul Julia as Gomez just made my day! Now, I like Tim Curry too, and quite a lot, but he didn't do "it" for me like Raul did in the role of Gomez.... perhaps I've said too much LOL! Anyhow, thanks for reminding me of those movies! Mission
The Princess Bride is one I definitely missed. Your son makes for a great HP, Captain Grey! Nice costumes. Personally I liked the third movie best, but I still liked the third book better. A very serviceable job at taking on the text by Alfonso Cuarón, however. It was better than I thought it would be, if a little inconsistant with the previous entries. I would liked Lupin to have been a little thinner, greyer and shabbier...but David Thewlis did a good job. They needed to increase the movie length to 3 hours to give him more lines - just so they could fill in my favorite character. Fancy, I always think of Pete Posthelwaite as the uber-hunter Roland Tembo in Jurassic Park II: The Lost World. (He was the bald guy.) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
CaptainCiaran
Captain Grey, How wonderful that ye and yer sprog dress fer the HP movies! I trust, too, that ye carry along lots of chocolates. As Prof. Lupin always points out, it'll make ye feel better (especially if'n there be Dementors close at hand). Mission
Yeah, he's been in a lot of movies. He has that kind of face, you know? I just picked JPII since he's instantly recognizable in that movie. Well, that and the fact that I spent hours poring over the movie trying to find the right raptor sounds to use in the Haunted House raptor room last year. See, Pete's in the bookend scenes to those where the raptors are attacking the hunters in the long grass and I must have replayed them about a thousand times trying to pick out the raptor sound with the least amount of background noise. Blah blah blah. (BTW, anyone need a fairly clean raptor scream sound byte?) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. Fancy
Ok, I know him! He's also the guy who gives James the alligator tongues in James and the Giant Peach. I knew if I saw him, I'd recognize him. There are many actors who are just character actors whom I don't know their names, but their faces are so recognizable... Shawn Wallace is one, as is the guy who played Newman in Seinfeld, (he will be forever known as Newman in my head, I think his name is Dwight something??? not sure.)
