In ancient times when sailors spoke about sailing the "Seven Seas," it generally meant all the seas and oceans of the world and was not literal. But in early times, these seas were regarded as the big 7: the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Indian Ocean.
