Mad Maudlin McCrumb
I'm sick to death of the SCA and the authenticity nazis.. I am all for having a good time, and learning something historical (hysterical) in the process, but the next person that gets on me for having elastic in my cuffs is gonna get it with my cutlass!! Are there any Naurical/Maritime/PIRATE events here in Oregon? SOS!! Boredom will kill me before the barnacles do! "You have a woman's skin, m'lord! TalesOfTheSevenSeas
It's really too bad that one bad apple with a nasty comment can ruin things. I've had both good and bad experiences with "Rennies". One lady encouraged me to follow my "crazy idea" and start Tales of the Seven Seas. She mentored me through the early days when I was getting started and she got us off to a very strong start early on. On the other hand... one time at a renaissance symposium, I had a guy walk up to me as I was packing up my booth that had info on our pirate guild at the end of the weekend. He sneered down his nose at me and said, "You know, if your guys really met my guys, my guys would have cut your guy's heads off on the spot. So how can your people and my people attend the same events?" (translation: get lost, we don't want you) It was that guy and a few other terribly arrogant people that helped me make a couple of good decisions about what kind of pirate guild Tales of the Seven Seas was going to be- fun and flexible. We don't do any single period of history and we welcome both historically accurate pirates and 'storybook' pirates. That's something I've been very glad that I've stuck too, despite occasional pressure from people that don't quite get what we're about. -Claire "Poison Quill" Warren Pyrate Mum of Tales of the Seven Seas www.talesofthesevenseas.com

TalesOfTheSevenSeas
Agreed! I didn't let it ruin the weekend, I ended up making some good contacts. Honestly, it was very sad to listen to all the griping, negativity, political intrigue and catty-ness. At one point, the girl in the next booth leaned over to me and said. "You know, the more I listen to this, the better a pirate guild is starting to sound!!" I knew then and there that keeping it fun and light-hearted was going to be the name of the game for us. -Claire "Poison Quill" Warren Pyrate Mum of Tales of the Seven Seas www.talesofthesevenseas.com
captweaver65
Are there any Naurical/Maritime/PIRATE events here in Oregon? there used to be an unofficial sca pirate/rogues event called 'the gathering' it was started as a protest against all the rules nazis and camping restrictions. it was held the weekend of egil's(end of may),but I couldn't find any listings or contacts anywhere about it this year. from what I hear,An tir is the best place to be for easy going people-I've had people say they where actually asked to leave because they wern't exactly period (tennis shoes!).yes I know that it is a historical group, but really-we're all here to have fun not control everyone to the point being miserable I will see one of the gathering's organizers in november and get any info I can on next year's event or get contact info to help organize one if it is not being held. Mad Maudlin McCrumb
Ay.. the gathering actually happened.. I missed it, woops! The best piratical even I can mention, (and any of you West Coast swabbies might think to make a showing, it's worth it) is the upcoming "Gypsy Days and Sea Dog Nights" and it is not actually officially SCA sanctioned, just started up by the local rabble. Turns out we're going, after all, and it promises to be really fun! http://damondesign.com/seadognights/index.html here's the website.. maybe we'll see you there, and combine forces, no? Mad Maudlin McCrumb
No worries, mate.. most times the SCA doesn't know whetehr or not it's SCA... it's down by the Lebanon exit, and then over a bit.. did you check the mapquest part? Hope to see you there! "You have a woman's skin, m'lord! I'll wager that hides never been rubbed with salt and flayed off to make stockin's for a pirates best cabin boy!" redhand
Lebanon? Really to me it sounded more like it was in Marcola/Mohawk which is just a few miles east of Springfield, lest I read my directions wrong. I know they gave two sets of directions, but it sounded like it was closer to the Marcola/Mohawk area outside of Springfield. If so, i'd stay on 5 and take the springfield exit, which'd be faster if yer askin me (I live outside of Eugene) On another note..Anybody know what they plan on offering as far as activities, demos, or what have you, besides "Best Pirate Flag"? after all they want $10 bucks just to walk in the gate . Cheers! Redhand
Mad Maudlin McCrumb
WEll, Lebanon was what my friend told me... you are right about the Springfield thing! Contests!! GALORE! Looks to be a bunch of fencing contests, "Best dressed Pirate" "Best flag" "Most flags" "Best witty repartee" "Best death" "Best pirate song" Treasure hunt (one for the kids, too!) darts, tablero (probably another tournament, if I could afford to enter, I would!!) boffer wars, roving bard contest, "Best Swashbuckling".. hell, I myself will be givin' out smooches to anyone that impresses me! Splinter
Argh,. Lads. I did not receive any type of mails from ye. Send up yer signal flags again, and I will endeavor to read 'em through the fog. As fer the Canadian reference, nay, we be not any Royal ship o' the line, but a crew of "pre-emptive salvage specialists" sailing of our own account against all flags... arrrgh.
