DocF225
ye be in luck sir.... I work for a "garage company" that casts Resin for military miniatures. We are getting in to Buildings for wargaming (soon as I can finish the masters for them). Metal casting is the same principles. Good RTV rubber molds will work for low melt metals. Micro Mark sells the stuff in limited quantities and Dow Corning sells it in larger amounts. You'll need some RTV, some low melt metal, a pressure pot, ladle and a heating device. RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) rubber comes in a two part kit. You mix it 50:50 and pour it around the masters . Let it sit for 4-6 hours and it sets up. "Butterfly" the molds to remove the masters, and you've got molds to pour all the little men you want. A 3.2# kit sells for about $25.00 Type 160 metal melts at 160 'F a candle flame will melt it. Type 280 melts at 280' a butane torch will do it. These sell for about 10-12 bucks per half pound. The expensive part is the pressure pot. These can go upwards of $300 depending upon the size of the cavity. Doc Wiseman - Ship's Physician, Stur.. er... Surgeon Extrodinaire and general scoundrel. PyratePhil
Thank ye, Doc. I hadn't been countin' on the price o' the pot - I think that would be buyin' a lot of figures from yer company. If ye have a 25mm line o' pyrates (plastic or metal), please let me know, or even better, maybe post a link here fer the others - I'm sure there's more gamers / collectors out there. MicroMark - there be a name I haven't heard fer a while - since I got outta th' model ship-buildin' arena many moons ago... Thanks again, Doc! ...Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum... ~ Vegetius
DocF225
Phil, ye may not be needin the pot to pour metal. Me skipper tells me metals don't have the viscosity issues of resin. Even thin resins like we use will air bind in a small mold cavity and the pressure pot is the only way to "force" the resin into the molds to completely fill them. Try it with the micro mark set first and see what happens. Most o our figures right now are 54MM and much too late in history. Me Skipper is a WWII German fanatic. I keep tryin to "expand his Horizons" but after 10 years of tryin, it's getting a bit tiresome. Doc Wiseman - Ship's Physician, Stur.. er... Surgeon Extrodinaire and general scoundrel. darkthing
I've cast metal miniatures, and no pressure pot is needed. The metal is heavy enough to force out any trapped air, at least if the molds are made right.
PyratePhil
Doc, Darkthing- Thank ye, gents! I'll be separatin' from some o' me filthy lucre in the near future at MicroMark, and I'll be lettin' ye know what bubbles up ...Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum... ~ Vegetius
