My favorites are:

The Black Pirate (Doug Fairbanks Jr. produced, directed and starred in this gorgeous work of art in the late 1920's. Though it's a silent film, he chose to spend what was then an extravagant sum to shoot the film in an early form of technicolor! He also based the look of the film directly on Howard Pyle's paintings. It's also pretty much the only pirate movie I know of that actually shows pirates pirating a merchant ship! VERY VERY Highly recommended. You can get it on DVD on Amazon.)

The Spanish Main AND The Black Swan (Maureen O'Hara in lucious technicolor. 'Nuff Said!)

TNT's Treasure Island (Like Hawkyns said...it's the best there is for gritty authenticity. And Christian Bale is the only kid who ever played the role of Jim with any real stones)

Blackbeard the Pirate (Robert Newton is a joy to watch as the greasy, nefarious Blackbeard. He sort of plays him as a deranged, darker version of his Disney Long John. The story completely butchers actual history, but it's good fun.)

And of course it goes without saying the POTC is right up there too! If only Robert Newton were still alive to do a scene with Depp in POTC 2..... :)

Just got the collector's edition of Master and Commander,... it came with an ad for two movies I've never heard of, but they look to have been made in the late 50's-early 60's? They are called "The High Wind in Jamaica" (starring Anthony Quinn as the pirate captain) and "The Pirates of Tortuga"... I'll look for 'em, and let you know, unless someone here has already seen 'em...

I jus' saws "Pirates in Tortuga"... in me book, not really worth it. What I hate about old movies is that the female characters are always so annoying or stupid. It's so irritatin', I jus' want to stab them. This is why I love Captain Blood... little to no women.

Rent it at yer local video store (I doubt Blockbuster has it) and see BEFORE ye buy it... even if it's fer $10!

I will probably end up swinging for this one, but I really liked "Treasure Planet", especially the soundtrack.

I thought Master and Commander was a really good one, though no pirates and full frame  . Also a big fan of the A&E series Horatio Hornblower, though neither movie nor piratey.

Really need to see that Muppet Treasure Island. I heard nothing but praise for that movie.

I liked Treasure Planet too.

BUT.....I still can't make meself watch the Muppets yet.

Loved em' as a kid.....but I just don't feel too Muppetty now.

Maybe I'll drink lots O' rum, then go rent it!

Me favorite be Roman Polanski's "Pirates". Watching Walter Matthau (Captain Red) being forced to eat rat by the Spanish was a hoot! Sorry, didn't mean to spoil the plot.

Together we shall sail the sea, best friends we'll always be. But, if we should ever disagree, the hell with you, and hurray for me.

I've seen Muppet Treasure Island at least a dozen times, and I still hoot every time I watch it. Tons of double entendres and other things that sail way over the kids' heads. Watch it once with kids, and once with adults. It'll be two different movies.

I been watchin' (and watchin' and watchin') the new Peter Pan on DVD. I saw it in the theaters and were rootin' fer the pirates the whole time.

Now that I've seen it several times on DVD, I realize there are a TON of references to budding sexuality. And Jason Isaacs as Hook makes me drool all over the place.

ARRRRRR.

You can name all sorts of "kids movies and/or kids shows" that really are funny later on in a person's life because of that very fact.

Look at the average Bugs Bunny cartoon. I'm not talkin just the explosions and all that fun stuff. The jokes and other pieces of humor are all on an adult level of humor. The Flintstones, same thing. I thought some things were cool on that show as a kid but when I was in college, we Roarrrrrred at the humor their. Muppet Treasure Island, the new Peter Pan, lets give ADULTS some credit here. Not everything made for kids is "too juvenile for the average adult".

Though not my favorite, I did see Cutthroat Island this weekend. There was a fair degree of cheese, which I enjoyed. And the battle scenes were vicious. Those two bald guys fighting with the ship's wheel? Heartless! I'm not sure that the cheese went with the violence, but if I saw that movie at the store for a low price, I would definately get it. I enjoyed the thing.

"The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning."

I like the subtle hints that PotC parodies Cutthroat Island. But, aye... Cutthroat was enjoyable Swashbuckling fun. Cheesy compared to some pirate movies.. but still adventurous. The characters could have been a bit more defined... but, oh, well. Again, still adventurous.

As to Muppet Treasure Island! Funny as hell! Trust me! I thought it was just plain crazy & silly before... but now... after seeing it in a historical, pyratcial, 18th c point of view... I just crack up! Ahhhhh, the memories! :(

& aye, Grey! I hear ya, mate! But... now.. I just have a difficult time seeing Jason as anything but daddy! :D

But those outfits he wore! Damn! ::le sigh:: I know I wanted Tavington's uniform.. but now do I REALLY want his Hook costumes! Down right utterly fancy! VERY foppish! VERY! But so very tasteful! Even Morgan himself would be envious of that attire.... or even Rackham... maybe Sparrow or Silver. :: shrugs::

Treasure Planet is rather good as well! I just LOVE the feline Captain Ameila! Hello! She best it with Sparrow & even Barbossa! Love her humor in the 1st 5 minutes of her appearance in the film. Fantastic!

Hey... we are on a roll here with Pirate films! MORE! MORE I SAY!

Of course I'm greedy for more, I'm a pirate, damnit! :(

I caught the ending of Swashbuckler with Robert Shaw and James Earl Jones last week on Encore/action. The great thing was that everyones favorite Grumpy Dad...Peter Boyle from Everybody Loves Raymond was the villian. That cracked me up...then to see him playing with a wooden boat in a big Bath Tub with a young man...Laughed even Harder. The duel between him and Shaw wasn't too shabby. Rapier vs Rapier...Rapier vs Cutlass...not bad...I just have to see this all the way through.

The Black Swan with Tyrone Power

POTC (of Course)

Cutthroat Island...I don't care I love this movie

The seven Voyages of Sinbad (Patrick Wayne)

I need to expand my collection a bit...but it is really hard to find these...I also need to find Captain Blood and some of those Long John Silver Movies...

How about "Muppet Treasure Island"? Just saw it again last night on tv. I think it's cute and really funny too! Love the music as well.

like with Tim Curry?! I do love my tim curry....

I agree completely.

I watched the classic Warner Bros cartoons as a kid and enjoyed them. Then, when I began to watch them as an adult, that's when I truly appreciated and fell in love with them.

So much of the humor was aimed at adults. Plus, the remarkable sense of comic timing, and Mel Blanc's incredible voice.

It just gets better with age.

Ah, the joys of moving from childhood into adultery....

I wanted to see some pirate movies, so this friend sent me some over msn, to try out so to say LOL.

Well, i saw Crimson Pirate, wich was funny, and Yellowbeard.

I've usually a pretty good sense of humor, but god..what an awfully weird and boring movie this was.

I'm trying to get Blackbeard, that should be better .

But upto now, POTC rules, along with Cutthroat Island!

Them are all good'uns, t'be shur, mates.

To POTC, the best pyrate movie ever IMHO, please add in Swashbuckler with Genevieve Bujold and Beau Bridges, and Peter Boyle as the heavy. Not much of a movie, but some great pirate ships.

Titan AE (pirate aliens destroy the Earth, then pirate humans seak the magic spaceship while battlin' ship to ship among space icebergs ... can't go wrong).

Cutthroat Island is a hoot, but Gena's a stick. Gimme Cap'n Blood! Holy technicolor Maureen O'Hara!

In this order...

PotC

Master and Commander (not really a pirate movie... but lots of good stuff)

Cutthroat Island

Peter Pan (the new one)

Muppet Treasure Island

Hook (Robin Williams is a hoot)

Shipwrecked

The Goonies (gotta love a good treasure hunt)

Treasure Island (Robert Newton)

Haven't really seen alot of the others, 'cept Treasure Planet... which for some reason or other, just struck me as really odd. B)

Ahoy Mates!

I've got a few movies...they are either Pyrate or Pyrate related!

1- POTC

2- POTC 2-when it comes out (I know I will love that one as well-Johnny Depp...how could I not like it) hehe!!!

3- Cutthroat Island

4- Hook

5- Goonies

6- Muppet Treasure Island

7- The Count of Monte Cristo (Has Pyrates in it)

8- That Hamilton Woman - It's not a pyrate movie per-se, but it has a nautical theme to it- And, I really love this movie!!!- Note: It's a black and white.

8- finally, there is a movie with Bob Hope I think it is, that I like...it's either a pyrate movie or it is pyrate related...I really don't remember because it's been a long time since I have seen it...but if anyone knows of the movie I'm talking about, then I would apriciate to know the name of it...It was really funny...and I would love to see it again...

Thats about it fer now...

Master & Commander (ditto what Captain MacNamara said)

Crimson Pirate and PotC at a tie....

to those who liked Hook- I thought it was alright, but not one of the better films with Robin Williams in. I suppose I should watch it again if it comes on tv again just to make sure though, it was ages ago that I saw it.

Because the world does revolve around me, and the universe is geocentric....

The new Peter Pan movie be miles better than Hook.

Mr. Jason Isaacs makes a superb Captain Hook. And yes, I be prejudiced.

Well I'm one for campy fun stuff. I just watched the DVD I finally got of "The Crimson Pirate" with Burt Lancaster and what a hoot! Some of the best lines, my favorite being: 'What's the point o' havin' a woman on board if we can't 'use' her. It gives piracy a bad name." Ok I might not have the words exact, but I'm close.

I can also see numerous scenes where POTC happily stole from it besides the underwater walking ship scene.

My other favorites are:

Muppets Treasure Island

Yellowbeard

Cutthroat Island

Hook

Rumba Rue

Hey Gang...I just had to run back here and tell you of the treasure I found

at Media Play. It is called "Pirates of Tortuga" on DVD...I haven't watched it yet but it was made in 1962..is in color and..wait for it...letting the Drama build...It has a prieview of the Black Swan...it is coming out on DVD mates. Huzzah Huzzah. I am totally stoked.

I can't wait to go on my quest to find it.

Thank goodness they are releasing these classics on DVD..now if only Roman Pulanski's Pirates would come out on DVD...I would be complete...
