William Brand Posted February 2 Posted February 2 I've been stumbling over some wonderful bits of music that were composed during the Golden Age. This first one is from The Four Seasons composed around 1718-1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua.

Mary Diamond Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Another lovely choice! Hoping these are not on the tin whistle request list - my skills are far to rudimentary. Oooh, shiny!

Damn, neither (modern reprint) of Playford that I own, 1651 and 1728, have that tune in it, or at least by that name. 88not that I'd be able to get anywhere near her playing ability, but I'm feeling I'm at the level that with enough practice, I can hold a melody, even a slightly more complex one
michaelsbagley Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Okay, a quick google search shows attribution of this song to "William Byrd" (but still 17th c.), or in one instance, I found it attributed to Robbie Burns. But sheet music can be found for free on this one.

Ooooh, pretty, but too long for my skill level. Though I did manage to start putting together whistle tabs for Good Ale for My Money… Oooh, shiny!
William Brand Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 1711 - Francesco Manfredini - Concerto for 2 Trumpets in D Major
Mary Diamond Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Searching for the sheet music for Good Ale for my Money (as I am not a musician, and picking out the notes myself is painful slow going), I came across this excellent article and accompanying images: https://theappendix.net/issues/2013/7/come-hear-this-ditty-seventeenth-century-drinking-songs-and-hearing-the-past Oooh, shiny!

michaelsbagley Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Aha! One I have sheet music for! But loving that video, I'm no pro, but he is definitely using a repro baroque bow (convex as opposed to a a concave modern bow), and I'm wildly guessing but that appeared to be a repro Amati violin.

Simpler structures and repetition mean this is another I might be able to pick up - any chance you can share the sheet music, Michael? It will save me the time recreating the song…. Oooh, shiny!

Playford should be here on Friday, thank you for the link! Oooh, shiny!

michaelsbagley Posted Wednesday at 08:12 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:12 PM Hey, this one I actually know.. Like well even. This is one of those rare tunes I can play without even thinking about it! 3 hours ago, William Brand said: 1670 - Playford's 'Jamaica' from 'The Dancing Master'.
