I'm starting to sculpt some 1/56th. scale (28mm) Pyrate miniatures in Blender for a game of “Blood and Plunder”. And I figured I post some of them here as I go along...

This is the first one so far, It isn't “rigged” yet, so it's still in a “T” pose, but once I have a bit more done on it, (weapons, belts, etc...) I will then rig and pose it, and then 3D print and paint it.

I saw in another thread where Stynky thought a Pyrate with a tankard would be cool, so that might be next. I remember how much people (kinda) enjoyed seeing themselves in the Pyrate Comic, so I might do something like that for the minis....

Oh yeah... I don't sell the minis, but post them on Thingiverse where the .STL files are free to download and print. Outta curiosity, does anyone here also have a 3D printer ?

That looks really awesome Patrick! I was thinking a group of accessories might be easier for personalization (I dont have a 3D printer):

dented or blasted mug

belaying pin

clyster syringe

@Patrick Hand this looks great!

It's been more than a decade since I dabbled around in 3D, but I assume it's all pretty much the same - polygons, verts, edges, quads and triangles.

I don't own a 3D printer (currently), but I've got a friend just south of me in Ashland that does. My (30+ year old) kids have been lobbying me to get one to make them stuff. My nephew, @James Tudor has one that he's used it to make Star Wars helmets and RC plane and car parts. I believe @blackjohn also has one that he uses for D&D campaigns and I think I saw one the last time I was visiting @michaelsbagley - maybe.

I got thinking about the specific details about FDM vs. Resin 3D printing, and how I should sculpt the Pyrate miniatures... (gotta think about this stuff in advance) I'm thinking that most people would only have (or have access to) FDM printers.

When I started sculpting and printing minis, I had an Ender 3 (FDM) printer. It took a lot of fiddling with to get decent prints of 1/56th scale (28mm) minis... So I bought a Mars 4 resin printer, and could get really good prints. I recently bought a Bambu A1 Mini (FDM) printer (with a .2mm nozzle) that can print “almost, but not quite as good as the resin printer”...

With Resin minis, the supports are much easier to remove, and can be sculpted with much finer detail.

With FDM minis, even with support density set at 7%, the supports are a real pain to deal with. And the parts have to be thicker so any details will print, But if I cut/slice the minis, so all the parts can be printed with fewer supports, and would print better. (but they would have to be glued together once they were printed )

So to make a long story short(er); I think I might have to sculpt them for Both, FDM and Resin printers.

Oooooohhhhhh - the possibilities! I believe you may have a career ahead of you, sculpting up custom minis!

Yeah, I own both an FDM and Resin printer.... I use the FDM printer for larger/lower detail items, and the resin printer for figures and smalller more detail stuff.

I know some people print figures using FDM, but resin is the way.

I did a test print of  the first  1/56th scale (28mm) “Pyrate with tankard” in FDM and Resin...

The FDM one was a major pain to remove the supports, and I hadda glue the sword hand back on after it broke... It's kinda rough, but on a gaming table would look OK.

The future Pyrates will be in more dynamic/action poses, not as static as this “test”.

Now to paint the resin one....

I start with a “base” figure, and then can change their clothing, hats, accouterments and pose to get a lot of different variation of the minis. This is a good example. These are all the exact same figure wearing a waistcoat, and posed differently with different heads and hats. I still have to sculpt some pistols and muskets, then I can pose the exact same mini with a mix of weapons... Yeah I know it kinda cheating, But then I will change their clothing (and heights) and do it all again. Then anyone can choose from a whole buncha minis, mixing (and painting) them up however they want.

I still have to do a test print, and then paint them. (the cool thing about Resin printing, is I can print a whole plate of minis, and it takes the same time as just printing one)

I would not consider that cheating at all!

Now, if you can add petticoats and a hood instead of a hat, and a frying pan instead of a sword, you’d have something…. Bess!

I sculpted 5 more pyrates wearing shirts and slops with pistols, now to do a test print...

I also found a 1/56th scale Longboat on Thingiverse. I had to do some work on it, but got it to print in FDM, I also added the mast and sail, now to see it the sail will print in FDM... If it works, I will post it as a re-mesh on Thingiverse, along with the Pyrate I have sculpted so far

I printed the sail in FDM, and was amazed that it printed with as few supports as it did; but the layer lines really show... But I came-up with an idea; I think I will try to use the sail as a mold for a few layers of paper mache. Then I can trim it to fit.

I also sculpted a 1/56th scale Spanish 18 pounder cannon and gun carriage.

Right nice there, sir! Will ye be making a cannon crewe, as well?

Yup... here they are, a Spanish Gun Crew to man the cannons. And Gabions (early period sand-bags) to protect the cannons...

I still have to do a test print of them, then they are next in-line to get painted... And I have a LOT of painting to do. But once I have enough painted for a good photo, then I will post them on Thingiverse.

Wow, that looks fantastic! I love the way the sails turned out. I hadn’t thought to do the sails with paper mache, but love the layered and weathered effects. I wonder if a similar effect could be achieved with fabric, like with cast wrappings in gauze, Modge-Podge, starches, etc…. I hadn’t visited Thingverse before - thank you for the sharing the link!

I made a more accurate two wheel Spanish Gun Carriage, but I have to re-print the cannon barrels (they decided to stay in the resin vat... So after cleaning off the fep sheet, I can try printing them again...)

And once I'm done painting the cannons and Spanish gun crew I can post pictures of them and the gun position, the other cannons and carriage, and the extra gabbions all in their colorful glory...
