Jib Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Any fans of pear cider? I like Ace but love Magners! I have heard rumors that Strongbow is making a pear cider but have yet to see in the States.
Pixel Pirate Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Heard good things about the Strongbow brand! I'll have to look into it as I am a fan of hard ciders.
Jib Posted August 5, 2013 Author Posted August 5, 2013 I recently tried "Fox" brand pear cider with apricot. Very nice!
Grymm Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) Pear cider ( mutter mutter if it's alcoholic and made from pears it's already got a bloody name in English and that's Perry not pear cider but trust marketing men to dumb down bah humbug!) is everywhere over here in the UK with M&S, Tesco's, Asda(Walmart) all doing their own brands(Most supplied by Gaymers, Thatchers or Westons) as well as various others coming to the fore, the http://thecornishcyderfarm.co.uk/rattler/ http://www.thatcherscider.co.uk/the-cider.ashx http://www.gaymers.co.uk/ http://www.westons-direct.co.uk/agecheck.aspx etc The M&S and the Brothers are very nice, quite sweet and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too easy to drink especially at 7.3% and 6% respectively. Edited August 17, 2013 by Grymm Lambourne! Lambourne! Stop that man pissin' on the hedge, it's imported.

Grymm, I am so glad you piped up and mentioned that there is a well established name for "pear cider" already! Every time I saw a post about it under that name a part of my brain was going "but, but, but..., it's perry!" I understand it is more difficult to make than hard cider is from apples because it has different organisms that make it alcoholic, and it can go "off" more easily. It is delightful stuff, well worth whatever extra effort goes into it! Edited August 22, 2013 by jendobyns
Mission Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 Reenactor Gareth Pugh ordered me some of that in a pub in Wales. Fine stuff. Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
Jib Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 Sorry Grymm and Jen. As a foolish colonist I used the name it is called on this side of the ocean. I knew of "perry" and that it had a long history. Where I live it is marketed as "pear cider", which is old since cider is apple.
jendobyns Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 Jib, No worries. As Grymm pointed out, it's the marketing folks who have created the name difference/confusion, as if people were too dumb to figure it out. Someone is missing out on a great marketing campaign for it as perry, really.
