Swashbuckler 1700 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 We may think what ever we want about the head scarfs but the neck scarves were there in the whole age of sail. I was wondering what colors would be typical etc. Same with materials linen, lace..... I have no need for patterns since I am only wondering clothing as an historical issue. 1640s 1680s 1690s 1720s 1740s 1740s 1770s "I have not yet Begun To Fight!"John Paul Jones

Fox Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 There are plenty of wills etc online, as well as various inventories. Many of them have been posted on this forum. Blue neckcloths are mention in the 1690s slop contracts: http://www.piratebrethren.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=48 Foxe"With this Fore-Staff he fansies he does Wonders, when, God knows, it amounts to no more but only to solve that simple Question, Where are we? Which every chi'd in London can tell you." - Ned Ward The Wooden World Dissected, 1707ETFox.co.uk
Swashbuckler 1700 Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 Thanks for the reply (I bet I test you nerves) It is odd that later slop contracts have less stuff than 1690s ones So there were colored ones as well as white. "I have not yet Begun To Fight!"John Paul Jones
Matty Bottles Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 How long have you been reenacting pirates, Swashbuckler 1700, if you don't mind my asking? :) "The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning." - Capt. Joshua Slocum
Swashbuckler 1700 Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 (edited) How long have you been reenacting pirates, Swashbuckler 1700, if you don't mind my asking? :) Everybody asks that sooner or later...... I am not actual reenactor but just a fellow who is interested in many things especially pirates. I have studied pirates for around 11 years and I am only 17 years old. I am member of pirate site/ game "Before the mast" like some other users here. I hope that I am not ignored while I am not actual reenactor I have similar lust for information and this is an nice place since this king of information can be found only here. Mission Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 I don't think anyone cares whether you're a reenactor or not, but many of you questions focus on clothing which is the sort of thing a reenactor wonders about, yet they're not really asked the way a reenactor would ask them. FYI, Matty, he draws fashion-plate style images. I believe he has posted some of them in his gallery. Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
Matty Bottles Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Mark, you hit the nail right on the head. Swashbuckler 1700, I wanted to tell you that I wouldn't mind at all if every new reenactor started out with as much enthusiasm as you, but since you seem have a great brain for details and looking for documentation, I didn't want to assume that you were new to reenacting. I don't think anyone minds, but don't be afraid to use the search function, or to visit the Pirate Brethren site (NOT the Pirate Brethren of Texas). Between these two sites, a lot of good information has been consolidated. Tartan Jack Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 Pirate Brethren isn't, as a group, very active anymore. BUT, the info on their site is a treasure trove. You'll also recognize a LOT of the same names on here are there (esp. in Capt Twill). -John "Tartan Jack" Wages, of South Carolina

It has no real matter since I have similar interests ..... I ask about clothing since that is thing that info is hard to find in booke etc. But I have also made questions about ships, weapons, flags etc. Edited May 24, 2012 by Swashbuckler 1700 "I have not yet Begun To Fight!"John Paul Jones
