Swashbuckler 1700 Posted April 21, 2012 Posted April 21, 2012 (edited) I Have read in many Cordingly’s works that B. Roberts final battle happened in huge storm. But was it clear morning them when HMS Swallow attacked? Does anyone know where the myth that Bart was teetotaler come from? Even Johnson does not state that he was a teetotaler and he implies that he drank beer . Edited April 21, 2012 by Swashbuckler 1700 "I have not yet Begun To Fight!"John Paul Jones
Fox Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 None of Chaloner Ogle's letters, nor the account of the battle in the trial account, mention the weather. Possibly Cordingly got the information from the log of HMS Swallow, but I don't have a copy here to check. The story about Roberts being teetotal probably originated with Charles Johnson, who described him as 'a sober man' who 'drank his Tea constantly'. I think that in Gaop ale or beer ( what is difference between these two?) was not even considered as real liquor ( even in medieval times even kids drank beer). And aboard ship there was little else good to drink than beer and tea..... "I have not yet Begun To Fight!"John Paul Jones
