Ballad's About Your Character

Dread Pyrate Greyhound

Recommended Posts

We all fancy our Characters as being 'one of the best' and so in the era, ballads would be written about legends, like the 'Ballad of Captain Ward' 'The Ballad of Captain Kidd', and Blackbeard's Death Ballad. I figured anyone is entitled to one, so Why not write one for yourself? That being said, here is mine, if you have one for your character, please share, and if not, at least tell me what you think of mine... It tells the Story of Commodore Greyhound. ( I wrote it in the format of the Ballad of William Kidd, but it is ALL ORIGONAL

The Ballad of the Red Gentleman

My name is Ol' Greyhound,

As I sail, As I sail,

My name is Ol' Greyhound,

As I sail,

My name is Ol' Greyhound,

I sailed the Pirate Round

And plundered any ships I found

As I sail,

I was taken from my home

As I sail, as I sail,

I was taken from my home,

As I sail,

I was taken from my home,

And sold to Captain Jones,

Now on the seas I roam,

As I sail.

I joined the Brethren of the Coast

As I sail, as I sail,

I joined the Brethren of the Coast,

As I sail,

I joined the Brethren of the Coast,

My captor's estate I did roast,

And I raised a glass in toast,

As I sail.

I was taken by the Dons,

As I sail, as I sail

I was taken by the Dons,

As I sail,

I was taken by the Dons,

And bound in iron bonds

To stand trial for my wrongs

As I sail.

I escaped and vowed I'd return

As I sail, as I sail

I escaped and vowed I'd return

As I sail,

I escaped and vowed I'd return

To plunder and to burn

Which I did since I was spurned

As I sail,

And Being angry still,

As I sail As I sail,

And Being angry still,

As I sail

And Being angry still,

Much Spanish blood I spilled

The battle gave me such a thrill!

As I sail.

I took a War Galleon,

As I sail, as I sail

I took a War Galleon,

As I sail,

I took a War Galleon,

Thought I'd have myself some fun

And plunder on the Run,

As I sail.

I roamed the Spanish Main

As I sail, as I sail

I roamed the Spanish Main,

As I sail,

I roamed the Spanish Main,

And plundered for my gain,

For 10 years of my reign

As I sail.

I was hunted by my foes,

As I sail, as I sail

I was hunted by my foes,

As I sail,

I was hunted by my foes,

So Eastward I did go

To look for plunder high and low

As I sail.

I took East Indiamen

As I sail, as I sail

I took East Indiamen,

As I sail,

I took East Indiamen,

Over Again and again

Hundreds more than ten

As I sail.

I spied twenty Moorish ships,

As I sail, as I sail

I spied twenty Moorish ships,

As I sail,

I spied twenty Moorish ships,

I played several of my tricks

And I plundered all but six,

As I sail.

I went back to the West

As I sail, as I sail

I went back to the West,

As I sail,

I went back to the West,

To take more gold filled chests

And prove I am the best,

As I sail.

I was met with ships of war,

Off the coast, off the coast,

I was met with ships of war,

Off the coast,

I was met with ships of war,

And the cannons they did roar,

But I promptly sank all four,

Off the coast,

I've been a bold pyrate,

On the sea, on the Sea,

I've been a bold pyrate,

On the sea,

I've been a bold pyrate,

Plundering ships small and fat,

With a tip of my hat

On the sea,

I have fifty tons of gold,

Stashed away, stashed away

I have fifty tons of gold,

Stashed away,

I have fifty tons of gold,

And gemstones manifold,

With riches uncontrolled,

Stashed away.

Now I'm too old for the trade,

As a rogue as a rogue,

Now I'm too old for the trade,

As a rogue,

Now I'm too old for the trade,

But I'm still the fastest Blade!

And a Legend I have made!

As a rogue!

Let every man Know freedom, Kings be damned,

And let the Devil sort out the mess afterwards.

I like it a lot... and it gave me something to think about... I might come with one for my character's or my friend's...

Brilliant idea mate! I'm actually in the process of writing a ballad of my own anyway, only it's more about my fictitious pirate ship, Heart of Gold, than about my character himself (although he does get a line or two). I'll put up what I've got so far. It's just the first verse, and it's to a tune similar to (but not exactly the same as) "The Foggy Dew".

When I was just a lad I took to the raging sea,

Thinking I would seek my fortune with the Crown.

Not a penny did I have, so I signed aboard with glee,

Thinking I would join a ship of great renown.

But the rations were mean, and the bo'sun was a fiend,

And the captain he was a cruel rake!

Ah, but little did they fear, their demise was drawing near,

For the Heart of Gold, she followed in our wake!

Heart of Gold, she came to save us!

Heart of Gold, for mercy's sake!

Ah, but little did they fear, their demise was drawing near,

For the Heart of Gold, she followed in our wake.

There's a bit more I've written for a couple different verses, but nothing really finished yet. I'll put the whole thing up when it's done!

Captain Jack McCool, landlocked pirate extraordinaire, Captain of the dreaded prairie schooner Ill Repute, etc. etc.

"That’s what a ship is, you know. It’s not just a keel, and a hull, and a deck, and sails. That’s what a ship needs. But what a ship is… what the Black Pearl really is… is freedom."

ODERLESSEYE

COPYRIGHT AUGUST 24,2010

LYRICS AND MUSIC BY

GERRI FINLAYSON-KOSCELEK AKA THYME AWAYE

Oderlesseye, you scurvy dog

You roam the seas so free

Decks blood red, its gold you seek

Standing at the Gates of Hell

Standing at the Gates of Hell

Oderlesseye aloft and free

Spies a ship sailin’ by

Oderlesseye you’re the reason men die

Standing at the Gates of Hell

I see you Standing at the Gates of Hell

Thirst for gold, rum and wenches

Has lead you to a port near by

Bounty on your head, you’re not dead yet

Standing at the Gates of Hell

Standing at the Gates of Hell

Ruthless Rogue, you made your way

With cutlass, cannon and gun

Took the gold all for yourself

Standing at the Gates of Hell

You’re standing at the Gates of Hell

Oderlesseye you’ll never die

You’ll always sail free

No cannon ball, no randy wench

Could put a rope on thee

Standing at the Gates of Hell

And you’re standing at the Gates of Hell

Sail away, sail away

You will never be caught

Quest for gold, me story’s told

Standing at the Gates of Hell

I see you standing at the Gates of Hell

Hangin at Execution dock awaits. May yer Life be a long and joyous adventure in gettin there!
As he was about to face the gallows there, the pirate is said to have tossed a sheaf of papers into the crowd, taunting his audience with these final words:

"My treasure to he who can understand."

I have two carols instead, do they count? In one of them, one of my characters is mentioned, and the ship captained by other of my characters. The other refers to the site as a whole:

I saw three ships aboard the site

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast

I saw three ships ready to fight

In the West Indies at war time.

And who was in those ships all three,

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

And who was in those ships all three,

According to their prior agreement?

Captain Crawford and Raoul were there,

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

And Sharky with his privateers,

In the West Indies at war time.

Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,

In the West Indies at war time?

O they sailed into the straight

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

Wanting the pirate ship to fight,

In the West Indies at war time.

And all the bells on earth shall ring,

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

That gunned down the “Siren” sank,

In the West Indies at war time.

.

Then let us all rejoice again,

Before the Mast”, “Before the Mast”,

That those we love did survive,

In the West Indies at war time.

* * * * * * * * *

Deck the site with gimps and holly,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

For the holidays to be jolly,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

We have weddings, fun and contests,

Fa la la, la la la, la la la.

And witty negotiations,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the story grow before us,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Strike the keys and join the chorus.

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow us and write to measure,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

And you’ll surely get a treasure,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old plot passes,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Let’s write joyous, all together,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Contests to win, story to further,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.
