Ivan Henry aka Moose Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 (edited) I am researching a late 17th Century British Grenadier kit and I am getting down to the details and need some help. Has anyone seen any pertinent documentation on their equipment during this time. I am PARTICULARLY interested in what materials their grenade bags were made of. I am guessing either a tarred canvas or a leather bag - to keep the fuses dry. Anyone still on here who would like to share information / insight? Anything helps. Bos'n Cross Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 .........iv seen an artist interpretation in an osprey book, that for sure shows the bag as being leather........ -Israel Cross- - Boatswain of the Archangel - . Colonial Seaport Foundation Crew of the Archangel
PoD Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 I'm pretty sure i have read that they were leather. from the first 2 illustrations it seems to be soft leather though from the creases in the bag itself. ...and then I discovered the wine...
Cuisto Mako Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Well apparently there is not much evidence regarding waxed or tarred canvas bag during 17th c in general, so probably a safer bet to go with leather...
Jas. Hook Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 I'm with Cuisto on this. I think that leather would be more durable bag for carring grenados. It is interesting that the top two illustrations are very similar, like one was copied from the other by a different artist???? Jas. Hook "Born on an island, live on an island... the sea has always been in my blood." Jas. Hook "You can't direct the wind . . . but . . . you can adjust the sails." "Don't eat the chickens with writing on their beaks." Governor Sawney
Ivan Henry aka Moose Posted July 5, 2011 Author Posted July 5, 2011 THanks! Looks like a leather bag it is... No for the grenadoes... (maniacal laugh)
