Tartan Jack
One project I've had in the back of my mind is the conversion of several specific modern reprints of period books with softcovers into period-accurate books. My problem is the location of period books to see how the covers looked and were bound. I've got a couple American Civil War examples, but that is 150 years later. I was going to ask to look at the 1724 copy of Charles Johnson last weekend in Washington, but it was gone before I had the chance. (Oh, and I tried the searh, but it kept timing out for me tonight. Appropriate links to previous threads would be welcome.) -John "Tartan Jack" Wages, of South Carolina
PoD
I'm attempting the same thing. Theres some good examples of period books on ebay of all places. Obviously they are ridiculously expensive but the pictures on the ads make for good research. Just go to the "books" category then "Antiquarian and collectable" then do a search for 170* (make sure you put the * then it searches for all books that have the number 170 in them including books that have 170+anything after these numbers). This will give you all the books from 1700-1709 they have listed. Obviously change it to 171* for 1710-1719 and so on. ...and then I discovered the wine... Capt. Sterling
May wish to pm Jack Roberts here on the pub... he does all our binding for journals and logbooks "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
There is a fellow on the Frontier Folk forum that does this and is very knowledgeable on the subject. he reproduces period Bibles and religious pamphlets. I know he has a website which offers both his products and free downloads of religious tracts for those who wish to do their own binding. he goes by Bible Man there. I'll find his info and and website and post it here later. Bo

jendobyns
I think he had a demo of how it was done, almost a tutorial, perhaps on his Facebook page. I'll check it out and see if I can find it. I'm not seeing it on the page provided by the link. Nope, not finding it through the FB page, either. Dang, will have to go digging for it. Was planning on using it to re-do some period cookbooks to look "right". Edited May 27, 2011 by jendobyns
Jack Roberts
Ok here's what I've found. Book Binding hasn't really changed during GAoP. So the process is the same til about late 1800's when better glues are invented. Still though the process for modern hand bound book is pretty much the same as it was then. Just minor changes in material. Here a great youtube link. It's in Italian but the links on the side are great too. That's first steps. Now I had to buy a couple of videos to learn how to attach the Book Boards . I have yet to find a good you tube video demonstrating this. Book Binding I used pure wheat paste for my glue. Just flour and water, is all you need. This is the leather I used. Mission Grain Leather Although you can use cloth also. Hope that gets you started.
