Dutchman Posted September 4, 2010 Posted September 4, 2010 So what did ya think of it? *snicker** gotta love the treasure room! hey, did anyone hit the glass and set off the alarm? at norfolk, the glass was kept to a polish just for the entertainment value of watching people run into it! as soon as there were new face prints on the glass, in would come housekeeping and clean it up again. We were able to tell when excitable kids were likely to set off the alarm and I'd wait around the corner for them to do it, then in comes Capt. Bellamy wanting to know who was after his treasure. and no, your not supposed to take pictures inside the galleries! getting to portray Bellamy for six months was an absolute honor! I can share this one since we are outside the exhibit. Me with Rolf, the Nauticus coordinator. And yes, we took some historical liberties with the clothing and did away with the holywood clothing.
wes1761 Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 Nobody hit the glass, it was pretty slow being a holiday weekend methinks. I was pretty much awed by it, seeing the Whydah Bell was really cool, plus the combo of everything else. I should have went earlier in the year, so I could have gone back more....overall really amazing, but nobody was there actually playing a pirate character, a bunch of happy people glad to be working another weekend it seemed like... If it was raining soup, I'd be stuck outside with a fork.....
Dutchman Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Norfolk was the first time reenactors were placed inside the venue. It rocked, plus we had unrestricted access to the place with the lights on after hours. we just couldn't touch the cannons or take pictures we actually had kids insists on bringing their families back multiple times to see us. at almost $25 per, that ain't cheap! I'll never forget this one. Kid, like fourth gradeish, comes in week one, comes back week two and i remembered him. Week three he is there with his cousins from out of town, i hammed it up with him to impress his friends. As he's walking out the door, he says he'll see us next week as his school is coming back. Sure enough, in he comes leading the way telling everyone about his friend Sam. I ducked down the back hall and got into the tavern area. He comes up just talking away to me. His teacher thought I was one of the figures until i started talking to him. I tell ya, it was a very humbling experience to be in the exhibit alone portraying Sam. We had to do a lot of research to pull it off but it was worth every minute of it. Israel Cross was a dead ringer for Hedrick Quintor and young Mr. Merryweather rocked as John King. Can't thank the crews of the Archangel and Vigilant for helping out enough either!
Diosa De Cancion Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 (edited) After getting the pleasure of coming up to play with you all for a weekend, Dutch, I am not sure why they did not decide to add performers everywhere they went. Having the Reenactors there really brought the WHOLE exhibit to life...from Cookie doing the food demos to Grace teaching games at the edge of the tavern, Pern in the ship room making rope and Sam running around talking treasure it REALLY brought it to life in a way just static exhibits cannot do. It was wonderful!! And it didn't hurt that Carl Brashear was there that weekend and fun to talk to and that the little girls kept thinking I was a princess since I was dressed more as a town lady than a pirate :) Edited September 5, 2010 by Diosa De Cancion Diosa De Cancion aka Mary Read www.iammaryread.com
Thomas McLaren Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 The St Louis Pirate Festival was asked to bring reenactors on two weekends of the exhibit here in St Louis. We had 20+ both weekends and the patrons loved it. It was great when the kids would turn the corner and suddenly see us. They would just freeze and stare. The best was when 2 of our "ladies" sang in the pub. Several of our friends from the Mercury Crew were able to help us out. If you ever get a chance to work it take the opportunity. It's great!!!!
