capn'rob
I have a Needle case made of bamboo. It's cut below a joint and a thin wood sleeve was put in to close it. It was the only thing that could hold my Sailmaking Needles 6" length. I'm sure that could be applied to many long narrow tools depending on the length of the bamboo sections. Perhaps cleaning tools for pistols. Writing instruments. I'm sure there are many more uses.
Dutchman
from what i understand, bamboo was introduced to the states around the rev war era as packing material from the orient. that out of the way, i have a cup made from 4" diameter bamboo dated 1740 that was carved off the coast of africa for my ????great grandfather. Captain Midnight
I have heard of powder measures for a pistol or musket being made of bamboo as well. "Now then, me bullies! Would you rather do the gallows dance, and hang in chains 'til the crows pluck your eyes from your rotten skulls? Or would you feel the roll of a stout ship beneath your feet again?" ---Captain William Kidd--- (1945)
Ben Fridley
I was just in the virgin Islands, where there was a store which sold clothing made from the fibers of bamboo. Not sure of the company name...but google bamboo clothing...see what you get!<br>

Guest
You could make a case to hold your papers like Dampier did.... Smaller chunks of bamboo make good needle cases, an awl case, or to hold small stuff in your ditty bag (and you can do some knotwork/needle hitching over them to really fancy them up) The contents of my ditty bag are not necessaceraly "Period"... I keep alla the stuff I need to sew and for ropework in the ditty bag.....
