adam cyphers Posted April 24, 2010 Author Share Posted April 24, 2010 ty all who have posted so far.definatly more historical im pretty sure the shirt needs some sort of split cuffs and the chest laces or buttons and ill be needing some period appropriate slops.id like to get the shirt into more of an historically correct look as ive just found a source for linen andwould like to use the one i have now as a pattern when i am able to purchase some linen.i have loads of heavy cotton canvas layin round which ill use until i can get my hands on some hemp.would waxed linen thread be ok if i run it through some beeswax?ive got a snap sack in the works and slops will be following shortly.i geuss youd call my hat a bicorn i wear it with the point in front unless the sun comes out too much.pictures of every thing so far above thanks be to dutch for that. Capt. Bo of the WTF co. Posted April 24, 2010 Share Posted April 24, 2010 If you have waxed linen thread you don't need to run it through the beeswx again mate. But yes it will be fine, just remember to pay attention to what weight of thread you use for which project. Typically and normally, the waxed linen thread you come by is for leather work. You should use something a bit thinner for your shirts and breeches and it does not need to be waxed really. Check out the clothing threads in Captain Twill forum, there's enough information there to make yer brain melt-down! Good on ye fer startin up on yer own. I haven't the patience or eyes anymore for the sewing of clothing. Still do my own leather work and iron work, some light gunsmithing etc. but the clothes I leave to those more talented than I. I am no gunsmith, just know enough to make simple modifications and common-place repairs, or diagnose problems for my friends so they know what broke and needs fixed. capn'rob Posted May 8, 2010 Share Posted May 8, 2010 What I have seen effective for a "sap"/truncheon, is a well hardened Star Knot as shown in Hervey Garret Smith's "The Marlinespike Sailor". A great primer on rope and knot work due to the detail of his illustrations. Ashley's and the Oxford certainly have the numbers when it comes to sheer volume but for the basics and fundimentals of knotwork, you can't beat Smith's. His got some other great projects as well. Smith's "Arts of the Sailor" is another good reference as well. Although not period pirate, if you're going to be around boats and ships and using line, the more we know the safer we are! A sea bag (basically a big ditty bag...) so you have something to carry your extra clothing and stuff in to events.
