Capt. Sterling Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Damnation... now I must purchase another book!!!!! "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
Mission Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Your link didn't work for me for some reason. If anyone else is having problems, try this one. (Do you 'spose there's anything new to be said about Rogers?) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
Fox Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I haven't read the book, but a review I read suggested that the book claims Rogers was the man who killed Blackbeard. It seems unlikely that anyone who's done any research at all could make such a mistake, so I suspect it was the reviewer's error, but if anyone does read this book I'd like to know. Since Bryan Little's excellent biography, Crusoe's Captain, is long out of print, this might be worth buying if it's not awful. Fox Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 So, I bit the bullet and bought the book. I have to say that I'm not massively impressed: the first sentence of the second paragraph of the introduction contained a factual error that was easy to spot. It doesn't bode well. I'm about 40 pages in, and so far I've come across a handful more errors and non-sequiturs. The author has just talked about officers moving from ship to ship in "lifeboats". I'm going to struggle through, but I've a feeling this one may test my patience. On the plus side: the writing style is easy to read; I've skipped forward to the relevant bit and the error about Rogers killing Blackbeard mentioned above seems to be a reviewer error rather than the author's; it's in print, which the infinitely better Crusoe's Captain is not. Oddly, I'm concurrently reading Robert Fowke's The Real Ancient Mariner, a biography of Simon Hatley who, amongst other things, sailed on Rogers' circumnavigation. Fowke's writing style is far too informal for my conservative taste, but his research appears to be much better. Fox Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 ...now he's talking about "the smell of cordite". Rogers' men must have had great long noses to have been able to smell a substance 179 years in the future. hurricane Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Hah, Animal. You know me better than that! I'll always be a pirate through and through. But what better way to avoid capture than to read their own textbook. They've been reading ours long enough.
