Captain Jim
Hey, I know that one: Spencer, a gaff-rigged foresail on a square rigger. Just called a gaff jib on a masthead rig. I still don't know salt shelf, unless it's retirement for old sailors. My occupational hazard bein' my occupation's just not around...

capn'rob
Aye, me bully mates, all. were it not fer th' time in shipyard were I t' see the Salt Shelf be placed t' it's purpose. Before Sheerstrake, Covering Board or Ceiling be fast in place, the Shipwright fixes a piece of wood between the Frames angled down from inboard out. This "shelf" is then given a full charge of Rock Salt and is then hidden away until the vessel is first "topped". In ships with double sawn frames, these were fitted above the mid-futtocks. If any sweet water (fresh) were to get through, before it settled at the frame ends, butt blocks or futtock joints. The pickled (salt) water will not promote dry rot. Sweet water will.
