Muffs!!!

Wow, Hugh, they really liked 'em thick and wild back then, huh?

"The time was when ships passing one another at sea backed their topsails and had a 'gam,' and on parting fired guns; but those good old days have gone. People have hardly time nowadays to speak even on the broad ocean, where news is news, and as for a salute of guns, they cannot afford the powder. There are no poetry-enshrined freighters on the sea now; it is a prosy life when we have no time to bid one another good morning."

Oversized for men and winter, small and dainty in the spring and summer...

ahhh- for men... that brought up my next question. does anyone have any clear pics of a man with one and what size it would be. I found a small grainypic on costumers manifesto, but it was a hurry search while gettin ready forwork.

Men with muffs.....

What would like to find evidence for is a "wool tube lined with fur". So the muff would be wool on the outside and lined with fur. That I have enough pelts to do.

Lady Barbossa, I didn't stuff it with anything. I thought about it. Perhaps I should have. Although the fur itself is pretty warm.

They all sort of look like dandies; flouncy feathers, holding handkerchiefs and...isn't that one guy taking a pinch of snuff?

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

Jack, I'll have to look around again because it's been a while since I've seen the fur lined ones. I do remember seeing something like that though.

I have in one of my books a photo of a muff that is silk with embroidery, but it doesn't specify lining or anything. When we get our computer set up (still unpacking the moving mess), I will scan it for you.

If you want pictures of a man with a muff there are probably some websites that can accomodate you.

Some of the depictions don't appear to be people dressed for cold weather. Note the unbuttoned coats exposed flesh, no scarfs, etc. in some of the pictures. I wonder if sometimes the muffs were more of a fashion accessory, rather than intended for warmth.

Oh most assuredly as they were carried, at least by women, all year long, not just in the cold months... somewhat like the masks that were carried as well... I have not yet discovered if there were pockets inside the muffs of the time, like those carried during the last century... no need for a separate pocketbook for the ladies with the interior pocket. Still looking for information on such.

That would be nice now wouldn't it? Capt'n have you read on ways to carry them? I've read about muff chains, but could they have been worn with ribbons or tied around the waist? It looks like some of the men have something around the waist to hold them up.

Has anyone come across references to knit muffs?

I found this in an inventory of transactions of the New York State Agricultural Society.... But it is for 1842. :-( It's waaaaay out of this period, but gives me some hope... lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry Lady. Br. not yet, but will keep an eye out for such...

and Jack... from what I am seeing, the men appear to have them attached at the waist with some sort of ribbon or slender sash... not seeing any chain yet...
