An Ode to Rum

Oh, nut-brown companion of humid tropic nights!

Oh, intoxicating nectar of the fertile gods!

In passion, you enhance all my earthly delights,

In battle, you wildly bolster my martial odds.

Born in the planters’ verdant sugarcane fields,

Jack Tar has taken you to the ends of this world

And I pray that you await me in the Kingdom to come!

But with all the wonders that your enjoyment yields

And all the garlands your faithful imbibers have hurled,

Surely, you merit a grander title than simply “rum”.

Oh, nut-brown companion of humid tropic nights!

I think I know her too...

Oh, intoxicating nectar of the fertile gods!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know her...

In passion, you enhance all my earthly delights

Oh, most definitely I know her!

Surely, you merit a grander title than simply “rum”.

Rum, rummy, rum, rum, rum...I like rum, yes I do. Have glass or maybe two!

Seriously though, all joking aside, nice ode mate! Well done!

Thank ye, mate! I'm thinking about adding some more stanzas and your comments make me feel like it'd be worth it!

There was a young lad what loved rhum

Who habitually got knocked on his bum

But he always ran quicker

To girls selling liquor

And blamed it all on his old mum. ;)

...schooners, islands, and maroons

and buccaneers and buried gold...

You can do everything right, strictly according to procedure, on the ocean, and it'll still kill you. But if you're a good navigator, a least you'll know where you were when you died.......From The Ship Killer by Justin Scott.

Oi! For placing that superlative limerick within the parameters of this topic, Ransom, you must be rewarded! Your reward, as proscribed by the Court of Pirate Law, is to quaff a slug of bumbo! As we all know, bumbo is made by introducing two ounces of rum to one ounce of chilled water and mixing in two sugar cubes, a dash of nutmeg, and, if you wish, a dash of cinnamon.

Get to it!

  • 7 months later...

I posted this on the limerick page back about a year ago, but it bears repeating, so:

Rum's a wondrous drink, d'ye see...

And can be had for a minimal fee.

Ye guzzle it down,

Wi' never a frown,

And all the day ye say, Tee-hee!

Damn, thats sharp!
