Capt. Sterling
Nice find, thanks for sharing the link! Mission
I think I'll pop that into the Vendors Index Thread. In fact, there's now enough of them that Barrel Suppliers deserve a category unto themselves. Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. Rumba Rue
What a great find! Curious if anyone has ordered anything from them, would like to check them out to see if there's any complaints before one should plop money down on them. Better safe than sorry. Mission
If you blow that pic up, the wooden staves used to make the barrel look pretty beefy. Of course, the largest one is only 2' high, so they're somewhat small barrels. They'd make nice campsite trappings, tho'. Lily Alexander
Something to cart things in and to sit on around the fire. Thanks Bright. They look like nice barrels but I'm not sure about sitting on them. With no tops and all, we'll end up with a bunch of pirates with barrels stuck to their butts. Mission
Here's another, for the vendor index: http://www.gibbsbrothers.com/ Great! Got it. Anyone finding that their favorite vendor isn't included on the Vendor Index Tread, feel free to post a link in that thread listing them. The more resources people have, the better chance they have of finding things! Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. Dutchman
ATTENTION- WARNING- HAZARDOUS AREA!!!!!! Agri supply is a very very dangerous place!!!! I went for the barrels and came back with a few pieces of decent cast iron cooking gear at really good prices. I can see where having something shipped would render it impractical because of the weight, but my goodness!!!! anyhow on to the barrels. they are 1/2 inch cedar staves that are tongue and grooved together, then wrapped with a light metal band and screwed every 1/4 of the barrel diameter to hold them in place. the tongue and groove make them pretty stable from what i can see, but i have concerns about the bands. I'm going to play with them and see if something else cant be done. the bottom has a drain hole in it, but that can be pretty easily plugged. I don't expect one could make these water tight very easily- but it could be done with lots of wax and soaking. the smallest one will nest inside the largest- the medium fits or accepts neither of the others. The medium makes a dandy seat when flipped over but the large is not comfortable to use as a table with it. All three are pretty light weight compared to the construction. the band. i think adding some screws would help how the tongue and groove goes together. Capt. Sterling
not worried about being water tight, but with some soaking do you think that the tongue and groove would tighten up a bit more? Dutchman
"not worried about being water tight, but with some soaking do you think that the tongue and groove would tighten up a bit more?" absolutely. that would also add some stability. they are a snug fit now. it won't take a lot to swell them as they are cedar. also the stain seems to be pretty chincy. Capt. Sterling
Leaving them outside and filled with water might help a bit with the stain job...
