PoD Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 There's a rumour that they are shooting at least some of the new film in St Ives in Cornwall over here in the UK. Don't know how true that is. ...and then I discovered the wine...
LadyBarbossa Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 I hope they have Cruz all CGIed and such. I just don't fancy her as an actress. So, Bess... who else is comin' back? Besides Depp and Rush? ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed." The one, the only,... the infamous!
Mission Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Somehow I doubt they would go to all that trouble to get Penelope Cruz and then play her against type. Maybe you're just seeing her in the silly roles (like Bandidas or Sahara). Clear your mind of predispositions and watch her in Volver. (Although POTC is probably going to be a lot more like Sahara than Volver, so maybe that won't help much after all.) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
callenish gunner Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Penelope Cruz is far better than say Jessica Simpson or Sandra Bernhard
1stMate Matt Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 A certain someone also told me that he made some kris daggers for some mermaid like creatures. More siren like. Ugly fish ladies in the water and beatiful ladies out of the water or something...Disney just had to have some fatacy creature... Old Crow Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I am totally psyched about McShane. I've only ever seen him in one episode of Deadwood, but from what little I've seen, the man is bloody perfect for this role! HEAR HEAR! I say!! McShane is just the man for the role, no one could be better. <<<rattles cutlas for emphasis>>> the sword, not the car. Old Crow Involuntary Marine Acquisitions Specialist
Mission Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 They should have undead skeletal mermaids! That would be so cool. (I once designed a skeletal mermaid prop. I only have very rough sketches of her, though. She never made it into production.) They really need to get back to basics with skeletal monsters here. Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. Captain Robert Darksoul Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Pirates of the Caribbean 4: No breast implants allowed! When Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits the screen, we'll be seeing sword fighting, swashbuckling and plenty of Johnny Depp. But one thing filmmakers want to make sure we won't be seeing? Breast implants. <A href="http://www.moviehole.net/201024092-exclusive-pirates-of-the-caribbean-casting-call">Moviehole has gotten its hands on the breakdown given to casting agents for the fourth film in the franchise, and one thing that description is quite clear about—natural breasts wanted. Here's the attributes they're hoping to find in the extras for a few key scenes: Beautiful Female Fit Models. Must be 5'7-5'8, Size 4 or 6 - NO BIGGER OR SMALLER. Age 18-25. Must have a lean dancer body. MUST have real breasts. Do not submit if you have implants. This is a show and tell of costumes with the director and the producers. Plan on an entire day of trying on clothes and being photographed. Professional Dancers who are Swimmers. Females ONLY. Age 18-30. All ethnicities. YOU MUST have an extensive dance/swimming resume. We will be shooting in Hawaii. Principal photography on the film, directed by Rob Marshall (Nine) and starring Johnny Depp, Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz, is supposed to begin in May or June, so casting agents—get to work! Mission Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Probably because of the scenes they're in. (Say, where is the ACLU on this one?) I'll bet that has to do with the mermaids. Sound like no skeletal mermaids after all... Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" Captain McCool Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Huh... well, the more I hear the less hope I have that this will resemple Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides in any way whatsoever... Captain Jack McCool, landlocked pirate extraordinaire, Captain of the dreaded prairie schooner Ill Repute, etc. etc. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "That’s what a ship is, you know. MorganTyre Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Huh... well, the more I hear the less hope I have that this will resemple Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides in any way whatsoever... Yeah, I agree. The more I hear the less it sounds like the book. A real shame too because the book itself is such great fodder for a movie and this one being made guarantees it never being done right. Still, it may be an entertaining movie on it's own merit and I do likes me some mermaids. Curse the PG/PG-13 rating for not letting them be done right.
Captain McCool Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Well, I dunno... the ones in the latest Peter Pan were actually pretty naked. Which was surprising, given it was, y'know, PETER PAN. That movie was weird... Captain Jack McCool, landlocked pirate extraordinaire, Captain of the dreaded prairie schooner Ill Repute, etc. etc. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "That’s what a ship is, you know. Mission Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I haven't read that book. Did it have a supernatural element? You know they have to have that - it's part of the format for the series. Studios don't like to tinker too much with a successful formula. Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
MorganTyre Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Yes, voodoo was the primary driver in the movie (the fact that they were all pirates was completely secondary) So much so that it was even used to explain the Port Royale earthquake. It's also used to explain of the real life exploits of Blackbeard.
captscurvy_nc Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 I'll have to get the book, never read it but feel like I need to now
Mission Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Voodoo is nice (and they allude to it in conjunction with the noxious character of Tia Dalma), but it's nebulous. As they themselves explain, "here, there be monsters." (Tangible ones.) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

MarkG Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I haven't read that book. Did it have a supernatural element? You know they have to have that - it's part of the format for the series. Studios don't like to tinker too much with a successful formula. This book and The Anubis Gate, also by Tim Powers, had characters who had absorbed magic which gave them extra abilities and weaknesses. They couldn't touch the earth and their powers were useless against someone who was grounded (wrap a chain around your bare ankle and let it drag). Magnetised blood was also effective. Ponce de Leon had bathed in a magic fountain - the basis of the Fountain of Youth - which should have made him ageless but he had aged over the centuries due to contact with the Earth. In the novel, Blackbeard followed secret waterways to bath in the Fountain. This let him survive his death at the hands of Lt. Maynard. Mark
Captain McCool Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 A lot of the supernatural elements in the book were surprisingly convincing, and meticulously drawn out, to the point that the reader almost began to believe them (or at least, myself). Clearly Powers did his research, and not just into Voodoo, and magic in general, but into pirate history as well. It's an interesting read, and very fun, but the ending lacks anything that could be compared to luster. Captain Jack McCool, landlocked pirate extraordinaire, Captain of the dreaded prairie schooner Ill Repute, etc. etc. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "That’s what a ship is, you know. LadyBarbossa Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 There be a lot of elements and places and things that still can fit into future PotC films. About damn time to bring in the Sirens and Mermaids. But if they be bringing in the Sirens, that's just... awww, poor Black Syren... they won't be bringing in Angelina Jolie as the top Siren. After all, that was Black Syren's "wish" years back when we had a thread on who would you want to play yo'r pirate persona in PotC. Oh, so many elements that could be part of PotC. And most fan fics are generally dodging and missing those elements! OH! Oy, Bess! Is Will and Elizabeth's lad in this one? I have to wonder since there's always an element of the credit clip that's in the following film. :) ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" Captain Robert Darksoul Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Bruckheimer On Cruz's Role In Fourth "Pirates" email to a friend By Garth Franklin Sunday March 21st 2010 05:38AM Jerry Bruckheimer says that Penelope Cruz's role in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is as the daughter of the film's villain Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Appearing at ShoWest, Bruckheimer tells MTV News that "she brings a lot of humor to it. And the fact that she's so feisty." He also confirmed that there will be "a little romance between [Depp's] Captain Jack and the character that Penelope plays." Though Geoffrey Rush will be back as Barbossa as well, Bruckheimer says the story is "going to take a whole new direction" and they're "looking for some new kids to be in it" in supporting roles which are being tested right now. Filming on the next 'Pirates' film kicks off in June under the helm of Rob Marshall.
Captain Robert Darksoul Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Disney Wants You To Show 'Em Your Tits email to a friend By Garth Franklin Monday March 22nd 2010 11:20AM The other week a casting notice went out for a couple of crucial scenes on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", the upcoming fourth film in Disney's mega-franchise. The notice required fit athletic women aged 18-30 with professional dancing, diving and swimming ability. One noted requirement though - "MUST have real breasts. Do not submit if you have implants" according to the sheet. It's an effort to be historically accurate and actually quite commendable on the studio's part. Of course that didn't stop many on the Net having a field day with every breast-related pun you can think of. On the weekend however, a few new details emerged over at The Sunday Times about the sequences. Seems that casting agents say "the bouncier the better" when it comes to the female extras for the film, "especially for sword-fighting action sequences". As a result, quite soon there will be what The New York Post dubs "a Hollywood-style jiggle-your-jugs test and jog for judges" that will take place during the upcoming costuming and fitting sessions. Those which are found to be false are out, no exceptions. The project marks a rare reversal on this position for Hollywood. Even this franchise in the past sought women with a 'bustier' look for the various 'saucy wenches' that populated the background and had no issue with them having implants. Filming on the fourth 'Pirates' kicks off in Hawaii around June.
captscurvy_nc Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 This is just too funny to me. Although it would be interesting to see girls sword fighting in bikinis to test the jiggly factor. Just another example of how there are still so many jobs cooler than mine. Ah, to be a jiggly consultant for a pirate movie, one can dream.....
HarborMaster Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 If I remember right ? Johnny Depp, and Penelope Cruz did pretty well together in " Blow " . Myself I find her sort of un-attractive , a sort of trashy looking Julia Roberts . Penelope was a rough customer in that film. Perhaps her character in the film will surprise us all ! I'll bet it turns out better than it sounds? I am not Lost .,I am Exploring.
