Capn Bob
I remember when SuperBalls first came out. We were living in Illinois then, my father attached to an air defense installation. I rilly rilly wanted one...never got it, of course. What I got instead, a few months later, was a free trip to Germany. Growing up, I might not have been to the ocean, but I've been over it... Damn, thats sharp!
CaptainSatan
Hmmn...Super Ball Grapeshot, what a concept As we say in Ireland let's drink until the alcohol in our system destroys our liver and kills us.
Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
OOHHH NOOooo! What have I done!?!?! Superball-mania revisited! I busted a couple windows with those things (accidentally), including a hundred year-old stained glass panel in the old First Christian church (bouncig one off the new asphalt parking lot), and Grammas front window (ricochet off a rock on the sidewalk). Not as devastating as a two-inch cannonball, but probably got me into as much trouble as this guy! Bo
Commodore Swab
Personally I know that the cannon I fire has a range of about 3 miles. I have never fired anything out of it except blanks, sometime I would like to take it to a range where I can safely proof it. Even after proofing I know that if I ever want to fire something out of it I need to make sure I need to ensure it is in a safe place where there is nothing for miles or at a range. Reading some of the posts makes me thing of the movie V for Vendetta when the "terrorist" is broadcasting and in his broadcasting is describing who is at fault for people living under an overpowering government. His words go roughly along the lines of "you need only look in a mirror, I know why you did it. You wanted saftey and security and all he asked in return was your quiet obedience" Many aspects of that film remind me where our society is going today. Work spend your money get your car, your house, have you kids, and follow all our rules, don't think for yourself or try anything new as you might get hurt. How many of us learned common sense to look before crossing a street? Now we have school zones, flaggers, flashing lights, cross walks etc. There was a time when it was natural for a child to know enough to help an older lady across a street, I wonder if those days are disappering as well? Silkie McDonough
You mention "common sense", as you said, common sense is uncommon these days. I admit to the occasional "dumb" move fortunately the only causality thus far has been my pride ...or some material like fabric, wood, glass. Quartermaster James
Here's an update on this incident: Felony Charges And here's more info on the Fort William Henry incident: FWH BTW: I thought we had a thread on the latter, but I cannot find it. Perhaps I am confusing boards?
Dutchman
the event suffers because there are now no cannons and word will spread resulting in the gunner not being invited to future events.
Capt. Sterling
Yes it really works that way... because alcohol and guns never work well together and one casualty due to stupidity equals law suits(there goes your money) and worse someone hurt due to that same stupidity ... there is absolutely no success in that... Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
When doing ACW events, anyone seen imbibing before battle is NOT allowed on the field at all, and if you are part of a gun crew, you lose your certifiate, and your place on the crew. That is how it MUST be, no exceptions. A six-pounder blast will take your head or any other body parts right off, no discrimination at all. Capt. Sterling
Well I went to some pirate festibal in key west last year and was offered rum punch by someone that was shooting. Hmmm interesting... thank you for letting us know... Capt. Sterling
Happen to remember the name of that festival and what time of year it was? Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
Why would any responsible individual with any sense at all want to drink and shoot? I smell a troll. Bo
callenish gunner
You might be right, Bo. He has posted in two threads both referring to drinking and shooting. If he is looking for folks here making such claims he should read the responses that the Pub gave Blackthorne the Self proclaimed Pirate King of the Mid-West. That Idiot was quickly put in his place for his stupid remarks and suggestions. Troll says I
Capt. Sterling
oh no, we love to find out about folks breaking the rules at events, because those are folks that we need to keep an out for and get rid of. It may not be an easy task but it is something we all here are very concerned about. As to the fort, perhaps you may mean PiP, perhaps not, but as one of the safety officers this year, I will now be even more on the alert and those caught we be gone from the event. callenish gunner
The only uncomfortable part of the dialogue is that we missed that individual acting this irresponsibly! Pardon us if words posted by someone none of us know starts casting assertions about actions that none of us observed. I hope you can see why such claims would make many of us suspicious; I can't say they didn't happen. From what you described I don't recall anyone from the crews I know using a sling bag canteen; I may have missed this individual but I'd think one of the other Captains or the Safety Officers or Rangers would have picked up on it. That's why I find the story suspect; there are other pirate events at the fort and in Key West besides the one that we attend. Some of the locals that our encampment observed, who were day trippers, were a bit rag-tag and undisciplined. Stynky Tudor
I think we missed his point and made the conversation about, "whether or not he saw someone drinking on the battlefield", when we should have been talking about what to do in such situations - like what safeguards are in place/are going to be in place. There's no need to imply someone (new) is a liar.
Silkie McDonough
As I mentioned in the other thread where this subject came up, If you see someone drinking alcohol (I often refer to the ice tea in my pitcher as something other than what it is) before or during shooting PLEASE report it!
