Spike-

I talked with you when you were here in Key Largo about the "new" fuse that I have. Hurricane and his crew were able to see it being used down the road from you, the Viceroy (Lawrence) has seen the fuse burn but not fire and thinks very favorably of it even though it isn't as good as a primer. I tried to send you an email thru the BiB myspace page linked to yours but don't know if you got it. When talking to you you seemed very interested in the fuse I have. I have enough for my little cannon but not enough to share, I think there is time to order some fuse before PiP. If you are interested for the crew OR if anybody else is interested I could put together an order before PiP but it needs to be done ASAP. The cost is roughly $40 for 100 feet (as I mentioned I have enough and do not need another 100 ft). For those of you who I have not shown this is in my opinion the best fuse you can buy as once it is ignited burns very fast and very hot in all the times I have used it I have yet to have a misfire and there is almost no delay between ignition and fire with no priming.

Ahoy Commodore Swab,

You sent me an email on MySpace about this and I replied there. And again, thanks for the offer. We would like to get one order, $40.00 of the fuse. You can email me at spikekeywest@yahoo.com.

....And thank you Jess for pointing out the fact that whether the changes are perceived good or bad, they are not done so out of any evil intention, except for Not Nigel.....

So, Captain Spike,

Understand the powder horn issue. But what if we use apostles instead of cartridges? I really don't like screwing with cartridges and always shoot the the apostles, sans powder horn if needed.

It's really just a cartridge in a closed bottle. Suttler John made them...

The problem with shooting from a horn is that a spark can set the whole thing off. The chargers in a bandoleer (the term apostles is 20th century) have one charge each, the same as a cartridge so they are at least as safe as cartridges. I think that the rules allow loading from a measuring tube and these should count the same. Personally, I think that they are safer. I'v seen priming flasks blow without setting off the bandoleer. If a charge should go off while you are loading, you have a good chance of the flash being directed away from your hand by the charger. I don't expect much protection from some newsprint.

I vveerryyy much agree with mark in this respect, thus why i want a bandoleer. To prove his statement, at this past blackbeard's , a royal marine broke some bones in his hand because a cartrage blew up while he was holding it. I think if it had been a charger, the small blast would have chosen a much easier direction to expel its energy in.....away from the person holding it. Plluusssss in my humble opinion bandoleers have a verry cool look about them..................of course though..........their no good if your too late in the GAoP...........I do also thoroughly agree about not loading from horns........muuucch worse than just a cartrige blowing..........

I've never poured from a horn, even one with a measure. Even before the apostles, I poured into a measure and then into the gun. Basically, a single apostle strategy. I've seen the measured horns but never liked the thought that behind that measured amount, is a horn full of powder, with just a small valve between the two of them.

I do agree with the apostles. I'd much rather have a large piece of maple protecting at least part of my hand than some newsprint or other material.

I also like to fire from the bandolier. It is convenient and quicker to load than to roll cartridges. If your bandolier is set right to exactly take the charge you want, then reloading from a small horn or flask is quick and easy. If I do use a belly box, I prefer the ones with the drilled block, which are required in most reenactments. The open style, like the Whydah box, allows powder to spill and does nothing to contain charges, should a spark enter. Likewise, if the wood or metal tops to the chargers on your bandolier fit properly, they will also prevent stray sparks, something very common with matchlock, which are my weapon of choice.

Speaking of which, odd question. Are matchlocks permitted at PiP?

Hawkyns, I agree with your weapon of choice, matchlock all the way. (no surprise as I am Sgt of Musket and safety officer for 2 ECW groups) Bandoliers are the best way to load, easy and efficent. You can then use your charger to prime your piece.

Matchlocks were allowed last year, so I assume it will be the same this year. Searle's buccaneers will be bringing 3 this year. I am sure Capt. Sterling or Spike could shed a more definite light on this subject.

So far the "rule" has been if allowed last year, tis allowed this year as well...but they sure did screw up the BP Regs then by stating long arms are flintlock and percussion (yeah, yeah, I know)... have sent off the question and hopefully someone will get back with the answer, but I would say bring em...

Am stepping down, have the flu/pneumonia...bloody doctors can't make up their F***ing minds...so much for having the best medical school in the world in yer own back yard...

any further questions, you may wish to pm Haunting Lily or Fayma directly and immediately...they both have their hands full as well so a pm will get their attentions faster then just posting on the pub

I have always preferred using a separate powder measure or "charge cup" as opposed to paper cartridges, which are a pain in the neck to make, and always create the problem of what to do with the paper after loading. (I never use it for wadding).

I am old enough to remember when the National Park Service rules allowed the use of a powder measure and a horn or flask. Properly used, this also avoids pouring directly from a horn into the barrel. I never quite trusted the concept of using a measuring spout to pour into the barrel. As Hurricane said, there is very little between the spout and the full contents of the flask. You don't want a half-pound of powder going off in your hand !!

The military practice of priming first from the paper cartridge always struck me as dangerous, as you are then pouring the remaining powder in the cartridge into a primed barrel, which always seemed to me as an accident just waiting to happen, and I have never felt comfortable about it. I have seen people get in a hurry and accidentally go to full-cock instead of half cock when priming. A sensitive trigger under that situation is a recipe for disaster. I ALWAYS prime after loading. Priming first was a military expedient in the old days, but I strongly disagree with the practice nowadays.

Hurricane. We are trying to stay away from bronze horms and powder holders. Apostles should be fine, since they are single shots. Thanks for bringing this up.

I agree with you there Cascabel, it is dangerous to load a primed weapon. We make it our practice to load the barrel and then prime the piece.

We allowed them on the Pirate line last year. There should be no change there, assuming they pass muster with Park specialist Kip.

Thanks Captain! Appreciate it - looking forward to taking down a few this year along with the fellow Brethren. I will make sure to stand next to Sgt. Johnson for he is a much better target than I, being of rank. Hahaha!

Dear Capt. Sterling, I'm sad to hear you are in ill health. Them sawbones seem to do a lot of head scratchin' for what they charge! I just wish you a very speedy recovery with a mild case of what ever you have. I hope you will feel better soon enough to be at PiP. Sincerely Capn'Rob aka Dutch of the "Meka"II
