silas thatcher
just picked up a used wall tent tonite !! made by panther primitives, flame retardent, too... it came with NO poles, a 10x12 fly... it was used twice and then sat in a storage shed for 5 or so years which gave it time for mice to chew a few holes in it, spill some oil on it and get a little dirtier !! obviously i have to patch two small holes in the roof, and the others are in one of the flaps... some of the questions i have are.....looking for recommendations on making a 2 piece ridge pole, 2x4's for the two uprights inside the tent, and 2x2's for the short walls seem right ?? and 2x2's for the fly ?? has anyone added a rear door to one ?? it looks like a small bit of work, but do-able nonetheless... and i got it for only 200$$ !!! I have the same tent, yes on all wood deminsions, made ears out of flat stock (metal) for overlaping ridgepole using carraige bolts and wing nuts, the 2x4 uprights have te same ears to allow the ridgepole to lay in between. don't worry about position, once to tent is taught all poles will stay in place. make sore to round the corners of the metal, alot of radius there . the further away from Scotland ye roam, the more Scottish ye become
callenish gunner
If you chose not to go with metal plates to joining the ridge pole you can use simple wooden splints (bevel cut the edges) and bolts with square nuts, since wingnuts wouldn't be period and just make sure you pack a simple wrench to tighten them. I'd also recommend that you take the time to paint your poles to seal out moisture so they don't warp or twist. silas thatcher
got the tent set up... needed to since it was a little damp, very dirty and stunk !! still have to radius the edges to the poles, stain them, etc. just needed to get it up, clean and start the airing out process.. turned out a little smaller than i imagined, but it comes with a 10x12 fly ( those poles are next on the project list ) ... so far i only have about 280$ in it... not too bad, but we now have our own pc tent !! callenish gunner
Staining is fine but then polyurethane/varnish them to seal out moisture especially the ground ends ...the repair works seems relatively minor looks sound enough to shelter you and yours!!! sutlerjon
Good lookin tent, great deal, too. Any mildew? Mild bleach solution inside and out let it air dry. You can do all that stuff to your poles, but as long as they are not stored in standing water just as they are will last forever. We've got poles on the sutler tent that are 20+ years old and they're just fine. My CW wall tent I used tree branches and they lasted for until my divorce and I left them behind .... Sounds like a lotta make work ta me, but it's your tent. I would patch the holes 1st, try a local auto upholstery shop we used 1 for tent repairs after storm damage over the years. If you've any other questions, ya got me # gimme a call. silas thatcher
all the poles are now made for the tent and the fly... after i pack it up, i will attend to finishing the poles... the patch work needed is minor we have a machine capable of handling it.. i'm just going to make patches to cover the holes and zigzag away !! i wanna stain the poles just simply because i liked the poles on lily and edward's tent... redwood kinda color... and it hides the bare pine look and probably some poly is the good idea i'll do, just so i don't have wet wood i'm packing up... i think it's worth it :) panther's website cautioned heavily against the use of any bleach, so i'm letting the sun do it's job...and most of it came off with some hot water and baby shampoo for soap... ps-- i may have to resort to bleach !! Capt. Bo of the WTF co.
One-half cup bleach to a five gallon bucket of water will do all cleaning that can be done using this method., but rinse quickly and thoroughly!
