Jack Roberts Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) What is the "stripy" garment underneath what looks like a waistcoat? It's not his shirt. You can see that on the sleeves. Edited May 11, 2009 by Jack Roberts
Silkie McDonough Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Emperors new clothes? I don't see a thing. Just a red X.
LadyBarbossa Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Alas, Roberts.... umm, th' image doesn't show up, mate. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed." The one, the only,... the infamous!
Fox Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Fairly certain that's a sleeved waistcoat. There has been some discussion about the possibility that it's actually an ASC ticken waistcoat. There's another guy in the same painting wearing a similar/identical garment. Silkie McDonough Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Foxe I am impressed ...I don't even see the box with the red X any longer and you can see the image? Hmmm ...could it be that you do not want to appear a fool because only a fool can not see the emperor's new clothes?
Captain Frankie Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 When you right-click the red X and select 'properties', you can see the URL of the picture... Click

Jack Roberts Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 Sorry all. It was working just fine for me. My apologies for that. Thanks Syren for the repost.
Captain_MacNamara Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Odd... all I get is the following: The requested URL /_TpgMbCAE1d4/SgeOXbyrfkI/AAAAAAAAAs0/fuZ8Vt1mV3I/89027164.jpg was not found on this server. Captain of the Iron Lotus It is the angle that holds the rope, not the size of the hole.
Ivan Henry aka Moose Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 What is the "stripy" garment underneath what looks like a waistcoat? It's not his shirt. You can see that on the sleeves. I was looking at that the other day and wondering the same thing to myself. It sort of looks like it might be a sleeved waistecoat. Doesn't the guy behind him have something similar on as well? One more thing - are his trousers, high water trousers or long petticoat breeches? THe sash is clear as a bell - great reference with lots to examine.
Ivan Henry aka Moose Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Here's the whole pic. The cabin of Viscount Boyne by Bartolomeo Nazari, 1731.
LadyBrower Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 It kinda looks like what would equate to a gent's thermal shirt of today. Did they wear stuff like that? It would make sense to me, it looks like it would be thick and textured... But that is my completely non expert opinion... Cook and Seamstress to the Half Moon Marauders Lady Brower's Treasures, Clothing and other treasures Hell Hath No Fury like the Wrath of a Woman... No that's it. callenish gunner Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 from the sleeves and neckline and the long hem it looks as though it could be a knitted sweater similar to a Guernsey Isle frock which would have been around in this period....just an opinion
Black Syren Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Sorry all. It was working just fine for me. My apologies for that. Thanks Syren for the repost. No worries at all, just absolutely glad I could assist. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/Dara286/trident01-11.png If you got a dream chase it, cause a dream won't chase you back...(Cody Johnson Till you Can't) Â Â
Capt. Sterling Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 (edited) from the sleeves and neckline and the long hem it looks as though it could be a knitted sweater similar to a Guernsey Isle frock which would have been around in this period....just an opinion I am rather thinking along the same lines as a sweater as the back hem appears to be "stretched" out of shape and hanging out the bottom left at a strange angle, and he's wearing a sleeveless waistcoat over it... just my two cents...it just looks so much more bulkier than, say the sleeves on the gentleman(the Viscount?) sitting with his arm draped over the chair back. Oi Foxe do you know if the ticken waistcoats were padded/quilited for extra warmth? Edited May 11, 2009 by Capt. Jack Roberts Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 Yeah I did noticed that about part of the "stripy" garment was hanging out. I just didn't want to think it was a coat with stripy sleeves. Interesting...
Capt. Sterling Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I just want the guy's slippers....or the equivalent for our time frame...
