Ivan Henry aka Moose
Hello, My lovely wife is working on a 1680-1720 mid-class riding/hunting habit. We have been unable to find a reference to footwear. While men wore boots while riding, did women of this time period do the same or did they wear something more typical for everyday dress (latchets, mules, etc.) Thanks! Capt. Sterling
Sarah Juniper, over in the UK, has a pair of women's 18th century riding boots... most likely will cost you a pretty penny, but perhaps you can at least ask her about her documentation... as she is making an educated guess as to the design. Unfortunately she doesn't give a very specific date with them. Edited April 14, 2009 by Capt. Capt. Sterling
FWIW, "riding habits" were also considered traveling clothes, in which case, your wife could most likely get away with wearing regular buckled shoes underneath her petticotes.
