Mission Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I wonder what will happen when the sugar bottles warm up? (I'll bet we're going to have ants all over the ordinary!) Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?" John: "I don't know." Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."
Capt. Sterling Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Like I said before, keep them in a cooler... there is absolutely no reason why they need to be out ahead of time and basically they are too fragile to leave laying around prior to use... "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
RustyNell Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 (edited) I agree with Mission...That was my concern with the sugar glass. Ol Zach's as well as the Ordinary won't be much fun once the ant's find the shards of sugar glass we miss when we clean up after the the thing. Its impossible to find every little shard scattered after a fight, not to mention the ants in your clothing after they find a little piece that got stuck to your sweaty shirt... LOL sorry found aunt's in my luggage when i got home...probably a result of mead spilt Sunday night, those little buggers are abundant at the fort. That was the reason i sought out an alternative.. not to mention the sugar glass has to be refrigerated which can present a problem at some shows... The Smash Plastic once you've made the molds I think breaks down to well below 10 dollars a bottle. Not to mention the older the bottle the more brittle it gets, which in my mind is a plus. You can make a case of them and if you don't use them all nothing is wasted. Edited April 1, 2009 by RustyNell “PIRACY, n. Commerce without its folly-swaddles, just as God made it.” Ambrose Bierce
Capt. Sterling Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Aye we have been discussing the cleaning issue as well...under normal circumstances once the stuff gets wet it isn't too much of a problem but down there and technically any where else, the issue of missing shards becomes a problem... even with sugar glass you can get a wicked cut... and spectators, especially kids picking up the remains could be a problem... RustyNell Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 agreed with the kids issue "sugar" glass as good as it sounds isn't edible, and yes it is dangerous. My thought for clean up is that the plastic doesn't get sticky so it can be swept up as well. “PIRACY, n. Commerce without its folly-swaddles, just as God made it.” Ambrose Bierce
Capt. Sterling Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 My concern is that with plastic and finding all the shards... this stuff, unlike the sugar glass, doesn't sound if it will break down with time. So missing shards remain a problem... "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... Capt. Sterling Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Sweeping the beach Nell? OUCH... with one good shot this stuff is going to go flying all about... really I think the main thing is to ask Harry first, then some how come up with a plan to contain it as much as possible. I could suggest using a facility with a floor which would be far easier to control, but then the spectators are limited... unless any brawls with glass breakage ended up on the fort wall or some such place... When we talked about it previously we had planned on doing it in the pub unless the new park manager disagree's. we could easily sweep up in the pub, if we contained the fight to the stage area...it could be done during the day in the sally port as well to be more visible to the crowds.. seeing that the stage is only used that one day for the trial. I think as long as its somewhere it can be swept up we don't have to worry about littering. I'll discuss it with Hairbone at the next B.I.B meeting Edited April 1, 2009 by RustyNell “PIRACY, n. Capt. Sterling Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I'll discuss it with Hairbone at the next B.I.B meeting thanks Nell that would be greatly appreciated!! Lily Alexander Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I would really be interested in hearing your experience in working with the smash plastic Nell. I wish they had trial sizes to experiment with. I've put out some feelers from my Halloween friends to see if anyone has worked with this stuff before. The company itself is very well known and their products are highly recommended. But so far, no one I know has worked with it. Animal Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Several years back, I used sugar bottles during a skit in Grand Cayman for their Pirates Week Tryal Of The Pirates. The problem I had wasn't the humidity and the bottles getting sticky, the problem was having one left for the skit. Broke 2 flying down there, i fell off a table and the last one was the one they used to hit me in the head. During the skit, it sat on the drunk defense attorneys table. Every time he moved, the bottle weaved like it was going to fall. I was having kitten back stage during this as it was the last one. The alternative they came up with was a lightly glued glass Coke bottle!!!!! If that had been used I would have either been in the hospital there or shipped back in a pine box!!! I really don't think that the humidity that time of the year will be an issue. We were in Cayman in late october and down there it kept raining and the humidity was at least 80 - 90%. RustyNell Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) It's not so much the humidity as it is the ANT's!! We go through BAGS and BAGS of ant killer before the event to try and get rid of them and still those little buggers are EVERYWHERE! When the BIB started talking about doing something like this a few years ago one of the reasons we nixed it was because we were concerned about adding fuel to the fire by leaving them little pieces of candy everywhere. Not to mention needing to refrigerate them (the candy glass bottles) seemed like a pain logistically, especially for events that required travel. Anyway though we haven't tried it yet, the plastic stuff gave me hope we might revisit the idea eventually. Edited April 2, 2009 by RustyNell “PIRACY, n. Rev.Sam Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Having done staged combat with Sugar glass, I can speak on its abilities to break easily, and not really cut or hurt.
