looks like an old sugar shaker. I/we have; one from the Williamsburg pewter collection (repro) that sort of resembles that of a huge salt shaker...she definitely is a lucky lass to have found such a lad

its saturday. she wont be on a computer so i'm safe. this is obviously a recently made item with the trays pattern being close but not matching the coffee set. the cups probably only hold about 1/4 cup- the grinder works like a champ.

interesting....the shaker-thingy....i asked me wif about it....she says she hasnt ever seen a set that came with a suger dispenser.....the Turks and Arabs perfer their coffee dark and bitter...the greeks add a spoonful of suger per cup.....even modern recipes(turks and arabic)...dont call fer any sugar....but thats our only guess at what it could be?!?!

welcome to the darkside of REAL coffee

well sugar does not pour out of the holes. its too large to finely flow. the grinder turns it into a very fine powder.

we looked again...and no Arab recipe calls for sugar....so doubt highly its a suger shaker...

still high money on cardamon shaker....tho why shake it??

Are you putting sugar in the grinder? That's for coffee!

I have not seen the piece in question before. I am familiar with sweet Turkish coffee. The sugar, however, is boiled with the coffee in the pot and not added to the serving cup.

Here's an idea, pure speculation mind ye:

The shaker is to hold whole decorticated cardamom which is added to the whole coffee beans and the two are ground together in the grinder.

No, just diverting the recipe from Arabic to Greek. I assume the true born one will add his own flourish.
