Lady Constance, Could you post a photo of this? I am curious about the way the back looks. So, please correct me if I am wrong. You only have one main pleat (this double-box pleat?) on your Mantua's back? LadyBrower
I don't think this is right, but it's what I did... Cheeky Actress
Oh, I see...you just opted to make your pleats in a 'v' shape and not do so many of them. Waugh pattern shows about 2 or 3 on each side of the center seam. Looking at the skirting of the mantua...did you pleat the robe? Cannot wait to see what it looks like when completed. LadyBrower
Ah yes. I think its just habit... All my civil war skirts went in towards the back. "Looking at the skirting of the mantua...did you pleat the robe?" Well, I wasn't really using a pattern, but looking at one from Janet Arnold "Patterns of fashion" and just draping and pleating, so I don't know if this is going to make sense, but it's not two separate pieces, but I shaped the back and the front, then cut the middle, so there is actually a side seem but the skirt is all one piece... does that make sense? I think the overall style is a little late but It gave me some good practice.... I think I need an actual pattern. All this "winging it" is creating wrongish stuff. lol Thanks for the help. lady constance
sorry ladies-- i have not gotten silas to upload my pics....{ sorry the camera and photo bucket are beyond my skills--actually they are beyond my limited amount of time to post on the web.... dont know if i am slow learner, or out of guilt, cant ignore my kids/ families pressing needs... easier to let silas have the time and me manage other issues!!} i took an elizabethan pattern for a dress, placed the pieces on pattern drafting 1 inch blocked square material... then i used some ideas from pattern making for theater for cut of skirt shape added to the elzabethan dress pattern...nad from janet arnold and nora waugh....... actuallly i am wondering if instead of my bellshaped curve for the skirt cut if it should be the opposite direction concave versus convex for the proper draping........ i am working in junk fabric { half linen/ half cotton} and just baste stitching... i promise to beg silas to post them....... sendhim a PM tellinghim to do so { there are soooooooooo many ways to skin a cat!!} Lady Brower------- you freaking amaze me!! why do yah have to live so darn far away.... and HOW long have you been sewing???????? you are a marvel! i want your sewing skills!! import them to me! lady constance
the back and fronts are attached currently..... please note the bellshape of the back pattern peice----do you all have a curve like this to the sides of the front pieces and back of the gown? for the folds/draping ? or do you have wedge shaped pieces that are inserted between front and back panels?{ for drape/folds/ curving of the gown } and i might even try box pleating the sides...... kind of a v shaped box pleat.. narrow at the top and v'ed off towards the bottom........... and then sewing on an elipse under the underside that cannot be seen........ i do definitely need a body double of the hips.....and thebumm roll and all the underskirts on......arghhhhhhh..... { i keep telling myself this is fun-- and i am learning all the way..........all the time..........
