So walking through the antiques sale on Portobello this morning and I run into this...

It's a quart measure Made in England by Thomas Matthews in 1720.

(At least that's what the vendor told me. He seemed fairly knowledgeable and trust worthy. He knew I wasn't going to buy it.)

Is a half-pint gill, also for wine by the same maker.

Maybe we can have some made?

Well,... (tugs at the cravat) You see I didn't even ask. :P

The reason being I picked up a tankard from 1780 and asked him how much it was. 280 pounds!

He went on to explain that a Victorian tankard was about 55 pounds as soon as you got into the 18th century prices soared.

So I'm sure they were pricey and he didn't offer up the price while I was looking at it.

So ah, don't um, I hope your not upset really.

a grand sense o humour the lass has....

ye can trying finding similar items on ebay, have seen some pub measures on there of late.....since pilliging is out ye might as well do the modern equivelent of ebay pyracy.... :D
