Capt. Sterling
NOTE: the light green should really be the same green as the dark green, BUT I thought it would be easier for you to see it if I made the colour slightly lighter. Capt. Sterling
NOTE: I have only seen shirts and shifts/smocks, that have the seam allowance on the INSIDE of the garment... I do not know if they have any shirts or shifts/smocks where the felled seam is done on the outside of the garment... as always...hope this helps and someone please proof read again...thanks Edited January 8, 2009 by Capt. Patrick Hand
I fold the seam one more time (as I'm whip stitching it) and pin it to my trouser leg.... I find that it makes the whip stitching easier to do.... but you have to be sure that your don't bunch-up the seam...(fold it and crease the seam, before you sew it...) Dang... that typed out as clear as mud didn't it?.......
Capt. Sterling
With new linen, it holds the fold pretty darn good, hit it with an iron and a little spray starch and ye don't need pins.... Patrick Hand
See... as clear as mud.... I pin one end of my seam to my trouser leg, kinda like an impromptu "Sail Hook" so I can pull the seam tight has I'm sewing it.....
Capt. Sterling
Actually that is a good idea... Patrick Hand
I should have just posted a drawing showing how I sew them.... would have made much more sense.... A seam rubber would be something nice fer me to make.... right now, I just crease the seams with my thumb...... But I'm also approaching hand-sewing more along the line of working with canvas/sails and not exactly garment sewing.....
LadyBarbossa
Fantastic graphic there, Sterling. :::applauds::: Patrick, ye were mighty clear. I think mostly what I've seen was on the inside. However, I think it can work on the outside or in some hidden part of the garment. I incorporated this on a shirt of mine. It's on the inside but makes for a nice seam. Apparently a shirt in Costume Close-Up is like that. And likewise I did this method with a pair of under drawers (which is now being repaired). From images seen, I haven't seen much of this in garments but seen most in under garments. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" "I'm completely innocent of whatever crime I've committed."
