Silkie McDonough Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I liked where the Hide was this year even though I would have preferred a view of the sea. The ground under foot was better for the number of people there in one spot and I think it also meant less sand in the food! lol I don't think all the camps knew that the fire pit was for everyone. No one came to cook their own meals. (Yes, I know the fire was out on Thursday & Friday AM ...I don't work with fire ...I didn't know how to bank it. Now I know) Anyway, the crews need to knw that the Hide & the fire is for everyone. As to the tent space ...I agree ...wait a bit. I hope to have a larger tent for myself and storage at the hide. Not that there wasn't room for one but we can't plan around what we don't have.
hurricane Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) I don't think it's too much to ask us to all help out. I know there are attendees who just want to come and play. But playing has a cost. If we weren't at the fort we'd all be shelling out $100+ a night in a hotel. If that means we all take a turn on watch or policing the bathrooms, so be it. It's not a big deal. I'm not sure what was going on at the beach bathrooms, but the ones at the fort were fine in the morning. Chum the waters, mates, not the toidies. :) Probably the easiest way to do it is to take all the registration forms you receive and designate watch duty. I know you can count on our crewe to handle times - just let us know when and what. We will make sure it's done. I'm sure the other crewes will do that too. As for the individuals who aren't affiliated, perhaps the Bone Islands can direct them on their duties, since they have an authority level at the fest. I don't think an hour or two of work for the fort each day or every other day is a big deal. That said, is there a way we can overlock the gate from say, 3 to 7 a.m. on festival days so that they are just locked. That gives everyone a down time. The last shift at 2 locks the gate as they leave and at 7 a morning shift removes the second lock. That would also ensure interlopers couldn't get in and out during the down time. I know we all really appreciate what you guys are doing. And I think it is all our responsibility to step up to the plate and help out. I certainly don't think you should ever be apologetic about having expectations and duties for those who come and play in your sandbox. -- Hurricane It's most appreciated that there are many who will volunteer for gate duty. Having pulled guard in real life as well as at CW events, I know it's not fun. But, if we don't come together to police this, there won't be a facility for us to do what we do.Other issues revolved around the beach bathrooms. Park staff indicated the facilities were filthy when they'd come to clean them in the morning. If we're going to allow all to utiliize the facilities, then we will require volunteers to help with the cleaning. Another issue revolved around someone saying they had my permission to use our shop facilities. An absolute lie. That person will not be invited back. Those were the most important items to come out of that meeting. By and large, park staff appreciated the assistance it received from the good majority of you. The Bone Island Buccaneers met this evening to work out these issues and from what I've read, y'all are going a long way to help correct these things. I really appreciate your help!! Capt. Sterling Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) Not anything against the staff Harry, but the one night when the beach bathrooms were left locked after closing, and no one from camp could use them, they weren't cleaned either... the mess there was left from the beach crowd and who ever was responsible for cleaning and reopening them that night... every other night, when they were reopened on time, there was no mess, and I never found a mess in the morning... now granted I don't go in both bathrooms all the time, but if the kids are going over late at night, I will step in and make sure things are safe... RustyNell Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I think a second lock from 3-7am is a great idea Hurricane. - all those of US who are staying in hotel rooms should know they need to be out before 3am or pull up a patch of sand. Anyone else should be either in or out by then. “PIRACY, n. Commerce without its folly-swaddles, just as God made it.” Ambrose Bierce
Capt. Capt. Bo of the WTF co. Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 A piece of canvas draped over said barbed wire works well, but i wouldn't know anything about that. Bo
RustyNell Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Nigel and I worked hours to get mine to look like that....next time i'll just let ya wear mine to go over the fence. “PIRACY, n. Commerce without its folly-swaddles, just as God made it.” Ambrose Bierce

Silkie McDonough Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Very valid point Lilly. I think a guard is best. I think all should stand a watch. If we all do all the jobs in a schedule then no one gets stuck with all the work and we all have fun.
RustyNell Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) wonder if there's enough of us that no one should have to stand watch more than an hour?? or we could stand watch in pairs it might be less BORING that way... DIBS ON.......Sterling...NO.... Nigel.....NO.... Diosa De Cancion Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Hurricane and i were thinking it would be smarter to have more than one person on watch... for example...when it's our turn, we figure we'll take a 3-4 hour shift and have 3-4 of us (or more) up there and play music and goof off right at the gate... who says it can't be a part of the party! Lily Alexander Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 (edited) If we consider all the vendors and campers, an hour or couple of hours, shouldn't be too much to ask from anyone. I don't think you can force a watch on anyone that isn't willing or perhaps uncomfortable in that role. There are other things those folks can do to help out. I love the gate party idea. Silkie McDonough Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 If the restrooms are attended frequently they too will be easier to clean. Additionally if we are all policing them then we are likely to be considerate of the next fellow. Problem is all of this requires someone(s) to make schedules. Harry ...can we make it so that anyone who camps must carry the load. That if they do not do their share they can't come back? Do we want to do that?

I've already banned one vendor for an infraction from this past year. I think everyone is aware of the situation and will police each other that we will get thru this without too much problem. ------- Fort Taylor Pyrate Fest MySpace Page Master Hairbone's MySpace Page ------- There is no more equitable judge than a cannon
