Ok, during the GOAP when the gov's decided they needed to reign in the pirates they offered clemancy and recruited repentent pirates to hunt down other pirates.

So, in this day and age, how would those of a piratey mind deal with the pirates of Somalia?

I think though the big governments are apt t' let these pirates continue on, as they are fighting the islamic extremists in the territory. Where the pirates are, the extremists are not. I think that is what I read, but I could be wrong.

So true Jim... it may be why I so appreciated the metaphor and the irony at the hanging when as a side, Chrispy was asked his name by Robbie and, "Justice" was all he replied (being the blind man of course)

Seems to me historically.. people have been quick to blame those, who at the end of their rope, scream out by lashing out. Rather than step back and assess the situation and throwing them a line, we are quick to tighten the noose. Robbie presented a good metaphor of government the other night. (hanging from Sterlings legs screaming "I'll help you. I'll help you")

Seems to me out of shame counties and individuals are all too ready to take advantage of the mob mentality we've all witnessed. Yelling 'bad guy, bad guy" he struck us first. It clears the conscious somehow, placing the blame on the real victims takes the spotlight off the one presently being attacked. When the truth is everyones been wronged. We just keep overshadowing injustice with injustice. I don't know how we will ever make the world an equitable place there is so much greed and corruption, it seems to get worse everyday...still I believe and know there are conscious people who want to make a change. I think the best we can do sometimes is stand in the middle and make people dialogue until they find the common truth. Still some people will refuse out of there own agenda to see the others pain. So often people fail to see each other. Honestly the Somali's I feel for these people. I know what they are doing is a crime...terrorism, pyracy, its a crime...but isn't greed and hunger and poverty, a crime as well. so we have a world full of overlooked peoples, worse still countries that are slaves to the world economy....

It's no wonder they would only speak with a child, I'm sure they've learned there is no one else they can trust.

See ., thats just it ., our government redered the CIA virtually useless ..., this happened a long time ago. I think is was during the Carter Administration . If the CIA and Naval Intelligence had free reign to protect this country in covert operations things might be alot differant.

Convoy- an effective technique from almost the dawn of navies.

Doesn't directly get rid of pirates, but does make it very hard for these speed boat thugs to capture containerships. Put 15-20 ships with one naval escort and your done. The snivelling will come from shipping companies about time lost based on staging, routes, and speed.

Or could do how they used to hunt U-boats. Dress a ship up to look like a merchant vessel, and then drop the facade when they get in gun range

Unfortunately, if you take out a religious based terrorist in the act you make him a martyr and validate his efforts to others in the group and as capt jim points out- creates more. if you leave him/ her to do their will they will kill more than themselves. a nasty double edged sword i'm afraid. the simple truth is that terrorism as it is known today has been festering for thousands of years and signing a paper with leaders and saying ok play nicely now isn't going to work for radicals and extremists. unfortunately, there is little that will stop it in our lifetime and there is no easy answer to it.

Some of these things are deeper than whats been portayed here. Violence stopped Hitler and his followers . Violence stopped Hirahito and his followers. I think this stuff has deeper roots. The war on terror is a 1000 years old already ., its just now we are back in the game. The USS Constitution was built to combat it. There is a global expansion of a religeon trying to take over property. Most wars I find are about three things.

I paid more in taxes last year than my wife made at her fulltime job. Actually it is common knowledge that some are indeed Doctors, Lawyers (*gasp!* Really, who'da thought that one!*), and many other 'respected' and 'upstanding', 'hard working' folk. Take those that hi-jacked th' planes, they did not come to America swing'n swords 'n brandishing firearms, they came here quietly, got jobs, went to our schools....a semi-sleeper one might call them, all the while plotting for 'The Day' (oh wait, maybe that was CIA, after all, everyone KNOWS that steel cant burn!! oh, and the moon be a giant cheese rum ball!!)

Alas, people after all these years still find it hard to grip that there really is such thing as "Evil", there truly is such things as "Evil People" (geesh, when they gonna let poor Charlie out??). Aye, some pirates be push'd t' their way by hardship, sense o' want'n t' belong, cruel government; and some o' them can be brought back by counteracting these situations, but there still be th' "evil ones", those that even if you gave them a Bazillion Trillion dollars of their own, their own country, a hundred wives, 600 screaming, hungry kids, 40 dogs and a pony o' their very own - they would still use all that t' plan how t' kill ye th' moment ye turn yer back on them - they be just plain "evil".

I would be willing to say that if you sat each and every one o' them Somalian pirates down in a private room, send in someone who could speak with them without offending them religiously (or their immediate enemy) ye could get 500 or more Different tales why they turned t' piracy and what they feel it would stop t' make them all stop.
