The schooner Western Union attacked the Coast Guard cutter in the harbor with stale Cuban bread and conch fritters. The Conch Republic then surrendered to the U.S., and demanded foreign aid (they are still waiting). Now every year Key West celebrates their independence with a reenactment of the Great Sea Battle, followed by a Pirate's Ball, and lots of other fun events.
